Eve was getting ready to go to Kibum’s apartment for dinner when she saw Yeji in the living room.
“What are you doing here?” She asked. All the other members had gone home and Eve came back from her parents house two days ago.
“I’m watching TV,” Yeji pointed at the wall where the TV was mounted.
“Yeah, but like aren’t you going home?”
Yeji shook her head. “I need to do too many things so I can’t go home. It’s okay, though, because it’s helping ITZY.”
Although Yeji said that with a smile on her face, Eve could hear the sadness that coated her tone.
“Okay. Get ready to leave, I’ll be in the car,” Eve said and walked to the door. Yeji got off the couch and followed her.
“What do you mean?” She crossed her arms over her chest.
“I’m going to Kibum oppa’s house for dinner–” Eve paused to tap Yeji’s nose– “and you’re coming with me.”
“I can’t go with you!” Yeji objected.
“Why not?”
“That’d be intruding.”
“How exactly?” Eve asked slowly.
“I didn’t receive an invitation to go to his house!”
Eve walked two steps to Yeji and put her hands on the younger girl’s shoulders. “You have been invited. By me.” She smiled and turned to open the door. “I’m going to the car. If you’re not down within ten minutes, I’m gonna come back and drag you out the house.” And with that, Eve left the dorm, leaving Yeji in the entryway, at a loss for words.
Eve went to the car and sat in the driver’s seat. She connected her phone to the bluetooth system and scrolled through random apps on her phone, waiting for Yeji. Within eight minutes, Eve could see Yeji’s figure walking toward the car. She got in and looked at Eve.
“Ready to go?” Eve asked, starting the car.
“Even if I say no, you won’t change your mind,” Yeji said.
Eve smiled at her. “I’m glad you know.”
She pulled out of the parking space and drove out the garage, entering the road. Yeji looked around the car. “Whose car is this?”
“I got it from the company. Which reminds me–” Eve snapped her fingers– “I need to return it tomorrow.”
They drove in silence for the rest of the journey, the only sound being Eve’s driving playlist. Within no time, they had reached Kibum’s apartment building. Eve parked in one of the allocated visitor parking spots and got out of the car with Yeji.
“Are you sure he’s not going to mind?" Yeji asked as they neared Kibum’s apartment door.
“Yes, don’t worry,” she said. now standing outside the door.
Eve looked at Yeji and turned to face her. “If he would have a problem with it, then I wouldn't bring you with me. But he’s not an asshole so he’s gonna be fine. Don’t worry.”
Yeji nodded and Eve turned to face the door once more, putting in the code and entering the apartment.
“Honey, I’m home!” She called out, taking off her shoes and putting on slippers, Yeji doing the same.
“Hey!” Kibum shouted from the kitchen. Eve and Yeji rounded the corner to see him busy cooking something in a pan. He hadn’t noticed Yeji yet as he hadn’t looked up from what he was doing.
“I brought a person,” she announced, causing him to look up. “I found her on the side of the road. Can we keep her?”
Yeji subtly nudged Eve in the ribcage. “Hi, Kibum sunbaenim. Eve unnie kidnapped me and brought me here. I hope you don’t mind.”
“It sounds like something she would do. And I don’t mind,” he waved her off, prompting Eve to say I told you so in a sing-song voice. “You can have a seat over there.” He pointed at the couch. “I’m almost done with dinner.”
Eve and Yeji went to sit on the couch, Eve taking out her phone and Yeji looking around the room.
“You drew that?” Yeji pointed at a painting on one of the kitchen walls. It was an abstract painting with the words Artist: Kim Nabi on the bottom.
Eve looked up and smirked. “Yeah. I’m something of a Picasso myself.”
“She got paint all over our mom’s couch when she did that painting,” Kibum pointed out.
“A) art is messy. And b) I was five years old. What did you expect?” Eve defended herself.
“I expected nothing,” he said, putting salt in one of the pots. “Mom would have appreciated not having to spend three hours scrubbing the couch.”
Eve shrugged. “Can’t change the past, can we?”
“No, we can’t.” he chuckled.
“Okay, dig in!”
The three were sitting at Kibum’s dining table, Yeji and Eve on one side, Kibum on the other. On each of their plates there was steak, steamed green beans, carrots and sliced potatoes.
“Thank you for the food,” Yeji said, picking up her fork and knife.
Kibum also started eating his food. Eve looked at him expectantly, not touching her plate. Kibum paused with his fork halfway to his mouth when he noticed her stare.
“No,” he simply said and continued eating, much to Yeji’s confusion. Eve pouted and tried her best to get Kibum’s attention, but he ignored her.
“Yeji-ssi, are you enjoying the food?” he asked.
Yeji nodded slowly, still confused about what was happening in front of her. “Yes, it’s very good.”
“Thank you.”
“Oppa!” Eve huffed, having had enough.
“Yes, Nabi,” Kibum replied as if he wasn’t ignoring her.
“Can you cut my steak for me?”
“Why?” he continued eating.
“Because you’re supposed to,” she whined. Yeji did her best to conceal her laughter, not used to seeing her member act cute.
“I… didn’t sign a contract,” Kibum said, a bored expression on his face.
Eve grumbled and picked up her cutlery. “Wait ‘till I tell Minho oppa about this. Oh, then you’ll change the story.”
Kibum rolled his eyes and took her plate, working on cutting her steak into bite sized pieces, much to Eve’s delight.
“He always cuts my steak for me,” Eve explained to Yeji.
“I cut it for her once when she was eight and she’s refused to cut it for herself ever since,” Kibum corrected, passing Eve back her plate.
“Only if I’m eating with him, though,” she added, finally eating her dinner.
Yeji nodded and continued eating her food. They all lapsed into a comfortable silence and finished their meal.
"Have you gone to visit your family, Yeji-ssi?” Kibum asked some time later after the dishes had been washed and they had migrated back to the couch. Garçon was asleep in his lap and Commes des was being played with by Yeji. Eve was sitting in between the two, poking Garçon to try to wake him up.
“Not yet, sunbaenim,” Yeji answered, looking up from Commes des, who barked to gain attention.
He groaned. “You don’t have to speak formally. You can call me Kibum-ssi,” he offered, slapping Eve’s hand away.
“Or ahjussi,” Eve added, “because he’s old.”
“Ignore her,” Kibum said, putting his hand over Eve’s mouth. He pulled it back not too soon later with a shriek, startling the dogs. “Yah! Why did you lick me?”
“Why did you cover my mouth?” She argued back.
“Covering someone’s mouth isn’t as bad as licking someone’s hand!”
She crossed her arms. “Who’s to say?”
He rolled his eyes and focused on Yeji again. “Are you going home later than the other members? Nabi told me that you all went home.”
“I… don’t know when I’m going home,” Yeji said, rubbing Commes des’s tummy.
“Why not?” He asked, a tone of concern lacing his voice.
“I have many things to do for ITZY so I can’t go home yet, but it’s fine because I’m helping the group.”
Kibum looked to Eve and back at Yeji, seeming to understand why she brought the younger girl over.
“Hopefully you get to see your family soon,” he said, Yeji nodding along.
The two girls got ready to leave and were standing by the door, the dogs now fast asleep in their beds.
“Thank you for dinner, Kibum-ssi,” Yeji said, bowing.
“It was a pleasure. You can come over even if you don’t bring her with you,” Kibum said, pointing at Eve, who dropped her jaw open in shock. Yeji simply laughed and nodded.
Kibum opened the door for them, walking with them to their car. He stood in front of it and waited until he saw them leave the apartment complex before going back upstairs. In the car, the girls drove in silence.
“Thank you,” Yeji started.
Eve quickly glanced at her then back at the road. “What for?”
Yeji exhaled. “For letting me have dinner with you and your brother.”
Eve reached over and squeezed Yeji’s hands. “Anytime, Jiji. Anytime.”
