Levi had signed up for the military to rid the world of monsters, but instead he’s put on babysitting duty. It’s a job that can be done by even the most incompetent brat, but it’s gone to him because he’s the person that Hanji trusts the most. Of course, it would have been more convenient to just throw these Marley “volunteers” into prison where they could be put under surveillance more easily, but the other military officials had believed there would be some merit in forming an alliance with these traitors. Levi isn’t so sure. If they’re willing to betray one party, what prevents them from betraying everyone else in the future? “How long are you going to stare at me with those eyes?” Yelena asks from where she sits on her couch. Ah, yes. She has a couch too because they had been stupidly kind enough to allow Marley volunteers to live amongst everyone else on Paradis – working closely with the military, renting apartments and houses to live in on the island, and starting a business. Levi’s sure Yelena will get to the last one in due time. “If I didn’t know any better, I would say you have developed a fondness for me, but I see the intensity of your gaze is borne of hatred rather than affection.” 

Levi grunts in response, but he doesn’t say anything else in response. He tries to keep conversation with her – with any of the Marley volunteers – to a minimum, but she always seems to be talking to him despite his lack of interest in starting any kind of relationship, professional or otherwise, with her. “Would you like a cup of tea, Captain?” Yelena asks. Normally, Levi would never turn down an offer for tea no matter how shitty it is, but the Marleyan tea is so peculiar to him. He had drunk it once, but that in the wintertime when it was still chilly and the Marley volunteers still made their tea hot. The cup he had was strangely sweet – he could smell something like sugar from it even though he hadn’t seen anyone add sugar or honey – and he hated how the taste lingered on his tongue even when he had long finished his cup. He had vowed to never again drink their tea, but he must admit that the iced tea, an odd beverage that he never would have thought of if he hadn’t seen Nikolo prepare it once while the Scouting Legion was on the beach on a hot summer day. “What kind of people drink tea cold?” Levi had muttered. Cold tea…surely this was blasphemy of some sort, but everyone else around him was eager to try this strange new drink. “It’s really not that bad, Captain,” Sasha told him, but he always took her comments about food and drink with a grain of salt. As long as her stomach was full, she was satisfied with anything. “You should try it,” Connie said, offering Levi his cup. Levi couldn’t trust him either. That brat was always in cahoots with Sasha. This could be another one of their pranks. Of course, if anyone else had tried to convince him to try a cup, Levi still wouldn’t have budged. Levi had sniffed disdainfully at them. Young people these days don’t know anything about the art of drinking tea. It’s as if anything with a hint of jasmine will do for them even if it’s cold as ice. He had politely refused them, but he had secretly always wondered what it tasted like. He could refuse this cup of tea again. Levi had always believed that any cup of tea served cold and with ice cubes, which are even worse than sugar cubes, is poison, but to refuse it once more might mean he would miss his chance to ever drink it ever again. He should at least confirm his suspicions about it… “Just one cup,” Levi says, and Yelena moves to pour him a cup. He frowns at how vibrantly colored it is – a bright yellow-orange color with a hint of pink rather than the more muted color of herbal teas he’s so familiar with. She’s about to put in a cube of sugar, but he raises his hand to stop her. “No sugar.” “Ah, do you like your tea bitter, Captain?” Yelena asks. She pushes the cup across the table for him. “If it’s not bitter, it’s not tea,” Levi replies before he can stop himself. When he glances up, he sees that she’s smiling. To stop from speaking to her more than he means to, he raises a cup to his lips to take a sip. It’s sweet – far too sweet, just as he had suspected. The taste of it, though, is not sweet like sugar like he had expected. At the same time, it does not taste anything like the bitter teas he’s accustomed to. It tastes like a fruit of some sort – no, more like a berry of some sort. There’s something else as well, a hint of lemon. And he hates all of it. He nearly spits it up back into his cup, but he manages to choke it down. “Would you like more, Captain?” Yelena asks, her smile growing when she sees the look of utter disgust on Levi’s face. She holds up the pitcher of tea – another thing that bothers him: the fact that this iced tea is served in a pitcher rather than a teapot – and raises an eyebrow. “No, thank you,” Levi coughs. “Don’t worry if it’s not to your taste yet,” Yelena tells him. She sips her own tea easily as if unbothered by the fruity taste or tang of the lemon. “You’ll get used to it.” Levi looks at his teacup, the amount of tea left so little and yet still impossible for him to ever finish. He can’t even imagine finishing another swallow. He’ll get used to it? No, Levi thinks as he wrinkles his face in disgust, he really doubts that.

Eye to Eye

Levi doesn’t usually mind obnoxiously tall people. After all, they’re able to provide him with a decent amount of shade when it’s sunny and, as much as he hates to admit it, they’re useful when it comes to getting things on the top shelves where he can’t reach. Does he ever want to be that horrifically tall? Fuck no. Life’s already shitty enough without constantly bumping his head against the top of doorframes and having to squish gangly limbs together to make more room for others in horse-drawn carriages. No, he’s fine the way he is and he’s fine if people are taller than him, but does she have to shove her gargantuan height in his face like that?

At first, he wasn’t sure if she was doing it on purpose. When she had arrived on Paradis – all two meters of her – she had looked down on him and gave him the strangest smile. He brushed it off, thinking that she was just tall and awkward. Her smile, he was sure, was just her way of politely greeting him as a new ally. Strange, perhaps, but his own social skills are too poor for him to judge others, so he didn’t think twice about it until later. He sees now that she must have been making fun of him all along, mocking him for his lack of height when she was tall enough to squish him effortlessly beneath her boot.

It only took him a few days to be completely certain of it. She was constantly handing him things even though they were within his reach if only he stretched a little bit further. She’d put her hand on his head or shoulders like he was a headrest instead of the captain of a formidable military force. Sometimes she’d even smile at him like they were good friends even though they’re nothing of the sort. That’s what he hates the most, the smiling. While there’s a chance it’s a friendly smile, a part of him believes that it’s nothing of the sort. It’s too much of a smirk to be friendly and that gaze of hers only reminds him of how much shorter he is compared to her.

“Do you really hate her that much?” Hanji asks him at one point. They have a habit of being too nosy. He’d tell them to stay out of this, but he’s learned that it does nothing.

“You can tell?” he asks sarcastically.

“You’ve been glaring at her for a while now,” Hanji replies. They take a seat next to Levi, leaning over to take a better look at his face. After all the time they’ve spent together, he thinks that they’d have a good idea of what his scowl looks like by now. “I don’t really understand why though. After all, Yelena is one of the first soldiers from Liberio that offered to work with us. In a way, we’re indebted to her, you know.”

Levi scoffs. “They only want something from us. Don’t act as though they’re doing us a favor,” he says.

“Yeah, working with us after we threatened them with a Titan, wiped out most of their naval fleets, and pointed our guns at their throats. And they helped us build our own naval forces, introduced us to more advanced weaponry, and even dined with us over Marleyan cuisine,” Hanji snorts. They frown and take a closer look, scrutinizing him carefully. “No, there has to be another reason why your distaste for her is so strong, but what is it?”

Levi doesn’t say anything. Let them wonder for the rest of their life. It’s nothing that concerns them after all. And what does it matter if he doesn’t quite get along with soldiers from Liberio or even Yelena in particular? He’s sure their operations will function whether he likes any of them or not. Hell, he hates over half the people he works with and yet the world still turns. Hanji’s just making a big deal out of this.

Suddenly, Hanji snaps their fingers and points at him, a spark of delight on their face. “You dislike her because she’s taller than you,” Hanji says. They state it rather than ask it, so sure that they’ve found the correct answer.

“What? Why would you say something like that?” Levi splutters. He’s not sure what surprises him more, the fact that Hanji would accuse him of disliking someone for such a childish reason or because Hanji is completely right.

Hanji ignores him, instead calling over the devil herself who is just passing by at exactly the wrong moment. Waving their hands ecstatically and drawing more attention than they actually need, Hanji calls her. “Yelena! Hey, Yelena! You know Levi hates you?”

For some reason, this mortifies him. It’s not like it’s anything to hide though. Levi just lets out a disgruntled sigh, looking carefully at Yelena. She doesn’t look offended or even hurt. In fact, she looks amused. On her face is a smile similar to the one that she had greeted him with when she and the other soldiers had first arrived on Paradis.

She walks over to them in just a few strides. Curious, she tilts her heard as she stares down at Levi like she always does. “Hate? That’s a rather strong word, isn’t it?” Yelena asks Hanji. She returns her gaze back to Levi. “Is that true? I always had the impression you looked up to me.”

He doesn’t understand why Hanji begins cackling right at that moment. He finds nothing about Yelena’s words particularly amusing and he’s still in the dark until Hanji wipes a tear from their eye after laughing so hard.

“Perhaps that is so,” Hanji says, struggling to regain composure only to have a giggle escape from their lips. “But maybe he feels that you’re always looking down on him, Yelena.”

“That’s not it,” he growls, but the two of them ignore him. He should just storm out there right now because he knows they’ll just continue teasing him, coming up with jokes that they believe are clever but are just childish and a waste of time.

“If that’s the case, you should have just spoken to me, Levi,” Yelena says. She straightens herself out, reminding him just how much she towers above him. One might think that she does this unintentionally, but he’s almost certain that she’s doing this on purpose. “We could have talked and sorted all of this out, although it might be difficult for us to see things eye to eye. You needn’t be so hasty as to find a reason to hate me, but perhaps it’s in your nature to be short-tempered and quick to jump to conclusions?”

He knows better than to be provoked by such trivial comments, but he finds his anger boiling over anyway. He reaches out to grab her by the shirt, pulling her down so that they’re finally face-to-face. “Listen here, punk,” he growls, but he’s made a very serious miscalculation.

He hasn’t taken into account just how close their faces are and, more importantly, just how brilliant and deep her large brown eyes are. Thus, he’s faced to deal with just how long and thick her eyelashes are, how her earthy brown eyes are flecked with a smattering of gold and green, and how her lips – so full and pink and soft-looking – are so close to his.

He knows what his next thoughts will be, and he wants to prevent them from ever crossing his mind because he knows that once they do, they’ll never escape. Immediately, he lets go of her. No, he does more than that. He practically pushes her away from him, causing her to stumble backward in surprise, but it’s already too late. The thought has already made its way into his head, and he knows that it will plague him later tonight, later tomorrow, and later even after that.

Yelena is too confused and startled to understand what had happened, but Hanji is far too smart for their own good. As Levi mumbles a lie about having to meet someone somewhere, Hanji calls after him. He can even hear that they’re smirking just by the tone of their voice.

“Hey, Levi,” Hanji yells. “What’s wrong?”

He doesn’t reply. Instead, he offers them his middle finger. Normally he’d be angry enough to tell them to shut up, but he can’t risk turning around. He knows that in doing so, there’s a chance that he’ll catch a glimpse of Yelena’s face, reminding him of what it was like to have their faces so close together, and he can’t have that. At least the chances of that ever happening again are incredibly slim.

Fucking tall people.

Small Talk

He doesn’t understand why any of them need to be friendly towards each other. Courtesy he understands. That only requires him to nod at the newcomers and acknowledge their existence. He can do that. But to hold a casual conversation with someone and get to know them better? That’s asking too much of him. Hanji says it’s an easy way to pass the time. Bullshit. If he wanted to pass the time, he could just clean the military headquarters again. That damn thing is always getting filthy because no one remembers to wipe the dirt off their boots before walking inside. Idiots. No, he’d much rather stare in silence at the wall across from him while the other person in the room stares down at their feet, uncomfortable with the silence, before finally leaving because they can’t stand the awkward atmosphere. He’s never really understood why they left in the first place – if you’re waiting for something, there’s no need to talk to the only other person in the room just to seem polite when it’s just a waste of time – but he always felt a little smug about having the power to make people leave the room without saying a word.

He can’t make Yelena leave though. Despite being a stranger to the island, she makes every room she walks into her new home. It’s her hulking stature, Levi decides, that makes her take up most of the space, spreading out her limbs and claiming her new territory like it was hers all along. It must also be why she’s so comfortable sitting in the same room as Levi. It makes it seem as though he’s the outsider when she stretches her arm across the back of a couch, her legs spread to take up even more room than she needs. It makes Levi wonder how one even manages to grow that large.

It takes Levi another week to realize she’s doing more than just making Paradis her new home. He realizes it when he notices she’s plopping herself down in the seat right across from him whenever they sit down in a room together, making it so that he’s forced to look at her even if he has no desire to speak with her at all. All he ever does is nod at her, just a quick up and down of his head, and does his best to stare past her, but she just looks back at him with this same smug smile. It makes him uncomfortable, her smiling at him, and he has to avert his eyes, glance down at the floor or the ceiling, and it’s only when he hears her chuckle that he knows exactly what she’s doing.

“She’s mocking me,” Levi mutters to Hanji after another one of those incidents. He tells her them everything in detail – the way Yelena saunters in, how she settles herself comfortably across from him, and the smile she uses to make him finally turn away from her – and they only laugh at him.

“Well, you’re rather odd company, you know,” Hanji says, wiping a tear from their eye. They become amused at the strangest things, Levi thinks. There’s nothing funny at all about this situation. “Well, maybe you should talk to her. It doesn’t have to be anything deep. It can be small talk or whatever.”

“Talk to her after the way she’s treated me? She’s been wanting to chase me out of the room with that weird smile of hers and you think the best course of action is for me to talk to her?” Levi says, disgusted. And they were supposed to be the smart one.

“Well, I mean,” Hanji says, shrugging. “Talking is a good way to diffuse any awkward tension. Or, like, any other kind of tension.”

He doubts that. He really does because talking to Hanji right now is giving him a headache, but it’s not like he has any other options.

Which is why he ends up trying to strike up a conversation with Yelena the following day as they await their separate appointments with the queen.

They’re sitting alone in the lobby, him on one couch with her seated directly across from him on another couch, and she’s smiling that same smile at him that she always does. He’s about to stop looking at her again, glance downwards or turn his head to look out the window, but then he remembers what Hanji says.

“Yelena,” Levi says, clearing his throat. Her smile stops and she’s looking at him curiously now, but this somehow makes him feel worse. “How are you?”

Another grin spreads across her face, this one amused, and she tilts her head as she asks, “I’m lovely, Levi, thank you for asking,” she answers, “but I thought you weren’t one for conversation. What changed?”

“Just making small talk. I do that sometimes. I’m very good at it,” Levi lies. Damn. Now that he’s started, he can’t stop. This is why conversing with strangers is so stupid, he thinks. “How are you enjoying the island? Is Paradis to your liking?”

Yelena relaxes back into the couch, an arm stretched across the back like it normally is when she’s observing him. “Paradis is wonderful. I’m sorry you’ve all been caught up in something unknowingly. An island like this should be left in peace.”

“Hm,” Levi replies. The topic is too heavy to be considered “small talk,” he thinks. So he asks another question. “Food?”

“Delightful.”

“Weather?”

“Fantastic.”

“City?”

“Absolutely gorgeous.”

“Hm,” he says after having run out of things to talk about. He never should have said that he was a good conversationalist. Now she knows for sure it’s a lie.

If Yelena is drinking in his humiliation, she doesn’t look it. In fact, she looks a little sorry for him, which Levi thinks is worse until she opens her mouth to break the awkward silence, saying, “Well, if there’s something I dislike about the city, it’s the architecture.”

“Architecture?” Levi repeats. He’s never taken any notice of the city or its buildings unless it was particularly extravagant or rundown. Otherwise, they were really just buildings to him. He’s surprised Yelena would have any thoughts about them. He never pegged her as the artistic type.

“Oh, yes,” Yelena says, nodding. “They’re lovely but too small. I always have to duck my head before walking through a doorway. I’ve hit my head far too many times to count because I’ve forgotten.”

“Well, you’re abnormally large,” Levi mutters under his breath, but it’s not quiet enough to escape Yelena.

“Excuse me?” Yelena says, raising an eyebrow. “I didn’t quite catch that.”

“I just said you were…very tall,” Levi mumbles. He’s never felt bad for being rude or overly truthful, but he feels silly now for saying such a thing out loud. “The last time we had anyone on the island as tall as you was when we still had Titans roaming around.”

“Is that so?” Yelena says. She doesn’t look offended at all. In fact, she’s smirking. “Perhaps the people of Paradis are small.”

“Small?” Levi says. He has to grip the couch cushions to keep himself from rising from his seat. She’s teasing, he knows, but the people are Paradis aren’t small. “I assure you we’re all normal-sized. Maybe it is only in your country where the people are all giants.”

“Hmm, perhaps,” Yelena says. It’s frustrating to see how much she’s having with this conversation. Levi wishes he never started it in the first place. It’s even worse than that strange silence and her smile. “That bed you’ve provided me is rather snug despite it being the largest size you have for a single person.”

“Is it?” Levi says, uninterested in any complaints she has regarding her sleeping conditions. He’s sure it’s just as bad as the rest of them anyway.

“…although you are small enough that I’m sure you’d fit in the leftover space in my bed. We’d fit quite nicely, I think,” Yelena says cheerfully.

Before Levi can even react or even fully comprehend what she had just said, the doors to the great hall swing open and the guards announce that one of them may speak with Queen Historia. Yelena leaps to her feet first, taking advantage of Levi’s shock to inform the guards that she’ll be meeting with the Queen now because she has another meeting to get to right after.

“Goodbye, Levi. I enjoyed our ‘small talk,’” Yelena says, giving him a wave and flashing him that same smug smile she had at the very beginning of their conversation.

He should have never talked to her in the first place.
