Stepping away from this one for now. I probably won’t know what I’m looking for out of this until I do a few (dozen) more. I like the cohesive palette, graphic elements, skinny lines vs fatter brushstrokes, pleasant feeling, and imperfect quality of this… but I just won’t know until I have more to compare it to. I did enjoy painting this more than previous works, because I stayed away from anything I wasn’t interested in. No noodling, no slavery to the reference. I think I could loosen up more actually. trying something new with a piece of yellow Moroccan ochre from Kremer pigments. Drawing directly onto the paper with the stone. The stone feels very greasy. It probably has clay in it. Therefore, the drawn lines can be activated with water. Then I use self made water/acrylic inks, made with earth pigments. I use iron ore (bean ore collected by myself), moraine stone powder, manganese black and a mix of various hematites from Kremer pigments. The inks are easy to make. Just put a bit of pigment into a small jar and add some water and a few drops of gloss acrylic varnish or painting medium (or watercolor medium),. Stir, and the ink is ready to use with a brush or a reed pen or for pouring directly onto a surface. Up to now I don't know how long these inks will be good, so I make only small amounts at once. They need to be stirred up every time you want to use them.
