On This Day in History December 19, 2012: Park Geun-Hye became the first female to be elected president of South Korea. Geun-Hye is the daughter of former South Korean President Park Chung-Hee who was assassinated on October 26, 1979. While her ascension to the Presidency was met with much enthusiasm and optimism, the good times would not last.
Scandals would rock her administration, leading to Park Geun-Hye to become the first elelcted President of South Korea to be impreached. Park Geun-Hye would later be arrested and found guilty of corruption, sentenced to 25 years in prison.
