Put a “◊” in my ask for a sticky note left on the fridge in the morning by my muse.
Chanyeol,
Went shopping with Tao, you were sleeping likea log as always so I didn’t want to wake you! I’ll bring you something back with me tonight, try notto miss me too much.
☆ - Luhan blinked for a moment processing what had just happened. Park Chanyeol had leaned over and kissed him. But it must have been some kind of joke then, right? Certainly why else would he do it. Still, Luhan couldn’t help the way his face heated up a little bit. Even as a joke being kissed was embarrassing. “If you wanted my so bad why didn’t you say so you piece of shit?” He laughed before promptly putting Chnayeol into a headlock-like hug.
“I’ll be back before you know it, Hunnie. Don’t give me that face, come on, smile? Don’t make me tickle you, you know I know all your weak spots..” Murmuring that last part against the younger’s ear, muffled chuckles were given and small pecks were shared, more words of encouragement exchanged from the taller.
“Just hurry back, okay? Remember, you promised me we’d do something tonight.”
“Promise I’ll hurry, baby.”
Sehun had never wished he could take something back so much. Perhaps if he hadn’t told the other to hurry back, he wouldn’t be in this position. He wouldn’t be sitting in a hospital chair in the waiting room, dried tears on his cheeks and dark circles under his eyes as he refused to look at anyone.
“Sehun-ah,” It was Junmyeon, when had he gotten to the seat next to him? Sehun gave him a quick glance, noting the look of concern in his eyes. “You should get some rest, you haven’t slept since we came yesterday morning..” the leader mentioned, and Sehun looked over to the few that were still there. The other members had been taking shifts of four or five, both to keep posted for any news that might come for Chanyeol and to keep a close eye on Sehun, who refused to leave the place even to freshen up or go rest like the others who were ‘off their shift’.
“We’ll wake you up if anything happens, promise.” The elder offered, and Sehun shook his head almost instantly. “No, it’s okay, I-I’m not.. I’m not tired.” He lied. His body was exhausted, but he couldn’t just sleep when the love of his life was on the other side of those doors getting probed at and unconsciously breathing through some kind of tubes.
The next few hours were spent leaning against Tao’s shoulder, eyes drooping as the other shared one of his earphones with Sehun. He was almost easing up a bit, until he’d heard someone step out of the double doors, reading off the familiar name from their clip board. “Park Chanyeol,” She said loud enough for the waiting room to hear, and Sehun practically jumped, running passed the others and towards the nurse—though aside from him and the boys, they weren’t the only ones heading up to her.
An older man and woman stood there, and Sehun tensed when he’d caught their gaze. His encounters with Mr. and Mrs. Park had never really been the most comfortable or welcoming.. and after they’d made it pretty clear that they weren’t in anyway accepting of Chanyeol and Sehun’s relationship, Sehun wasn’t sure he could face them anymore. Especially not now when he was at his weakest points.. But then again they were still Chanyeol’s parents and they needed to be there just as much as he did.
“Family only, please.” The nurse explained after seeing the large group of boys standing behind them, furrowing her eye brows as Sehun’s expression dropped. Mr. Park pointed out their parentage, and she gave them a nod to go ahead in, and as the boys began to take their seats again Sehun stayed standing, biting his lower lip. “I’m his.. ugh..” Sehun began, before stopping and figuring that boyfriend didn’t really qualify as family, and dropped his gaze, figuring he may as well take a seat. “His fiancé,” He’d heard the older woman speak up, her grip on Sehun’s shoulder as the maknae looked up in confusion. The nurse gave her a nod and motioned for them to go inside, and Sehun simply let Mrs. Park guide him, trying to hold back all the questions of confusion as to why she’d called him that and why she was currently touching him.
“So we figure this must be yours,” The nurse mentioned, picking a ring out of the box of things they’d managed to save from the accident. She explained that they’d found it in his pocket, and Sehun stared at the ring in disbelief as it was dropped into his palm. Why would Chanyeol have a ring on him—why would Mrs. Park refer to him as Chanyeol’s fiancé? Sehun’s face lost even more of it’s color as his mind began to connect the dots slowly.
“Chanyeol was going.. t-to propose?” Sehun whispered, and he thought back to what he’d said before the accident. That he’d needed to do something, but it would only take a little while, and when he got back they could have some romantic evening alone, they’d kick the boys out, and do something special.. Sehun’s hand went up to cup his mouth as he noticed his apparent in laws staring at him with furrowed eye brows. “H-He told you?” Sehun blurted out, and both gave small nods, explaining that Chanyeol was certain he’d wanted to spend his life with the younger boy, and wanted his parents to accept it as well. And to Sehun’s surprise.. They did.
“You can come inside, now.” The nurse said as they stood outside the room door, opening it up for them. Sehun had practically ran inside, heart racing when he was greeted with the sight before him. Chanyeol didn’t look good. He was bandaged up almost everywhere. His chest was littered with stitches and scars, and his usually bright smile was covered with an oxygen mask. It honestly broke his heart to see the other like this, so lifeless and pale.. but there were still faint heart beats being alerted to them through the monitor, and Sehun would take it despite the painful sight.
He let his parents greet the unconscious body first, forehead being kissed by Mrs. Park before she and her husband went back to speak to the nurse, giving Sehun some privacy. “Hey,” He whispered lowly, sitting at the edge of the bed and making sure to leave enough room between where he was sitting and where the other was laying, not wanting to hurt him even more than he already was. “I-It’s me, Chanyeol. Sehun? I’v been here for a while.. Well, not here, actually in the other room but.. yeah.. I’m here, baby. I’m here a-and you’re going to be okay and..” He was getting choked up, watery eyes gazing over at his hand. The knuckles were bruised, and Sehun brushed his thumb over them gently.
“..And I love you. I love you so much, Chanyeol. Please stay with me? They’ve been saying all these crazy things about how you’re injuries aren’t healing.. How you’re getting worse.. a-and I don’t.. I don’t want to believe them. It’s really starting to worry me, I don’t like feeling this scared, Chanyeol. I’m really, really scared right now..” He whispered, using his free hand to wipe off his tears. “I haven’t slept in like, three days. I haven’t bothered to go home because I know the bed’s not going to help if you’re not next to me,” He murmured. “Although you seem to be sleeping just fine,” Sehun cracked a small smile, looking at the other’s closed eyes. That’s something Chanyeol would’ve said, he could practically hear him laughing in his mind.
“I-I.. I said yes, by the way.” He stared down at the ring on his finger, wearing it proudly after reading the small engraving of Sehun on the inside. “S-So you should.. wake up soon, Chanyeol. Wake up soon because we have a wedding to plan. I said y-yes, and I love you, and we have a wedding to plan.” He choked out, smiling sadly as tears fell more quickly now, leaning over to press a kiss to the spot on Chanyeol’s forehead that wasn’t bandaged.
And then it happened. The heart rate monitor slowed, and when the line had gone flat Sehun’s eyes went wide, his own heart beating quickly as commotion quickly rang around him. The nurses and doctors were barging into the room, circling the bed and urging him away, but Sehun couldn’t move. He couldn’t hear anyone, his own heart beat sounding in his ears as his vision went fuzzy. The next thing he knew he was being pulled out of the room, kicking and screaming without even realizing what he was doing, begging to be left inside with his boyfr—his fiancé.
He’d burst into tears the moment he was in the hall way, Mrs. Park’s arms quickly wrapping around him for comfort like his own mother would have. Had this been any other time sehun would’ve tensed at the feeling of the woman near him, the woman who’d scolded him so horribly upon their previous meetings—but right now, right now he needed the comfort. And right now, Mrs. Park was going to set aside her beliefs and comfort her soon to be son in law.
It was a near hour before Sehun could finally muster enough will power to speak up again, and they were back in the waiting room like they’d started, curled up against Tao as the older boy patted down his hair. Hearing the familiar ring tone, Tao pulled out Sehun’s phone from his pocket, holding it out to him as if asking if he was up to talk to anyone. Sehun glanced over the caller ID. He hadn’t answered anyone’s phone calls since hearing about the accident, but right now the person calling was someone he’d needed to speak to, so he’d break that streak. Taking the phone and getting up, Sehun answered it as he stepped down the hall.
“Umma?”
“Sehun! Oh, thank goodness you’ve answered. We were starting to worry, is Chanyeol alright? Is everything oka—”
“What happened on Friday?” Sehun asked suddenly, ignoring any of her questions. After hearing his mother’s confusion and questions, Sehun licked his lips, trying again. “The accident was near your house. I know he was there, mom, tell me what happened.” Sehun demanded, this time.
“He had a sit down with me and your father, Sehun. He asked some things..”
“Did he ask if he could marry me?”
“..So you do know. Yes, he asked and your father gave him our blessing. He picked a beautiful ring, Sehun, I don’t know if you’ve seen it..”
“I’m wearing it,” He whispered, closing his eyes as his thumb stroked over the thick band around his finger. The conversation went on, Sehun eventually deciding to answer her previous questions on Chanyeol’s condition. After many words of comfort, hopeful thinking, and a few shed tears, Sehun had managed to say his good byes seeing as he’d heard the double doors open up again.
I’m so sorry.
There’s nothing left that we can do..
I’m so sorry.
You have our condolences.
I’m so sorry.
His vision went fuzzy, his breathing had stopped, his legs gave out and he could feel arms grabbing onto him to keep him standing, but Sehun’s body had given out and he didn’t care enough to try and gain it’s control back. Everything hurt, it hurt more than anything he could’ve possibly imagined. “Sehun! Sehun, Sehun-ah, please, breathe!” He could hear one of the boys shout, he couldn’t tell which, he could hardly hear it at all as he felt his cheek being patted harshly and water being splashed on his face.
The next thing he remembered was waking up in bed, his heat still racing after his little freak out at the hospital. Wait.. had he been dreaming? Where was he? At home? As Sehun sat up, he groaned, setting a hand over his head as he felt a familiar hand at his shoulder. “Lay back down,” Kyungsoo muttered, frowning as he was the one left on Sehun-watch for the hour. “W-What happened?” He groaned, rubbing his temples. “You’ve probably got a head ache from all the crying and shouting. It’s only been a few hours, you passed out after.. the news.” He explained, prepared for the worst reaction out of Sehun and waiting to call the others as if to hold him down for a repeat of the hospital fiasco.
Sehun’s expression fell again, his eyes going glossy as it all came back to him. He glanced down at his lap, hands set in it, the ring still clearly on his finger. He eyed it, licking his lips as his throat had suddenly gone dry, and his heart ached, but he was all out of tears and screams and fits to give. Wincing, Sehun bit down on his lower lip, laying back down and curling into his covers, this time not on his usual side of the bed, instead turning over to lay on the side of his late lover.
"Yifan!" Chanyeol smiled softly, catching the boy's attention before grabbing the collar of his shirt and pulling him into a gentle kiss.
Yifan doesn’t even get to see Chanyeol’s face, recognizing the latter by voice alone before another face is shoved against his and oops, there goes a press of lips against his own and he responds naturally, reciprocating the notion as a hand finds the small of the younger’s back. “Well, that’s a fun way to greet someone, I suppose.” He says with a breathy laugh.
