Yohamaru airplane comic: extras
A very, very rough translation of some of yeonDoo’s Twitter replies that interested me from the airplane comics.
“lololol Maru’s clueless about technology…just look at her being startled by a smartphone in Ep11…I like a Yoshiko who would tease this kind of Maru lol”
(In response to a comment saying “Of course Yoshiko-chan is wicked, zura!”) “It’s just a cute joke, zura~ Well, not for Maru though...”
(responding to a comment) “Thank youuu! lol Yoshiko’s favorite thing in the world is teasing Maru...”
(In response to a comment saying they laughed the most at Mari’s expression at Maru’s words) “Mari was born with a silver spoon in her mouth so she’d never understand Maru... :’( Thanks for reading! And thanks for the follow :D I’ll be in your care~~”
yeonDoo thinks that a Maru mukbang (live stream of her eating) would be crazily cute and would totally be her calling in life, and headcanons Maru as a stress eater, haha. (tweet)
When someone said that they thought that you always had to pay for airplane food, yeonDoo explained that every airline is different. Specifically, for this comic it’s all covered by Mari, so Maru really didn’t have anything to worry about. The asker went “i’m sorry zura…i was just joking but you actually replied so seriously…” and yeonDoo replied that it was no problem because they actually put a LOT of thought into that issue before uploading the comic. TL notes for the airplane comic
The $ on page 3 was originally a ₩ (won, currency of South Korea).
RIP Maru’s cute country-girl accent. I could only convey some of it by inserting a lot of “zura”s. :\
I used a different font for Mari in the omake section to indicate that she was using her accent. In the original Korean comic, she literally says “HWAT” like in the KoiAqua audio dramas. God bless Mari’s Engrish.
I do a rough pass when I start TL just so that I have words in place when I start typesetting. After I’m done cleaning, I’ll correct my TL plus adjust it as necessary to fit the allotted space. Thus, it might interest you to know that one of Maru’s lines on page 3 (in the bottom-left panel) was a wonderful mix of country-girl accent, incredible rudeness, and - for whatever reason - a polite sentence ending.
So in a brilliant stroke of laziness, I initially typed that line as “Imma take care of things my own self, so kindly fuck off, zura!”
(…please don’t take that line seriously. If it isn’t obvious, I screw around with the script a lot in the beginning just to have fun while typesetting.)
But yeah, in that panel plus the one right before it (rightmost panel in the center row), Maru speaks so angrily that more of her accent than usual slips through. Please feel free to picture Maru speaking in a super-savage manner for that portion. :)
By the way, my album of translation permissions has a spoiler for the next YohaMaru comic I’m working on...:3c
