Tucker 101- tucker who suffered a tbi (traumatic brain injury, went without oxygen for 10 minutes or more following a surgical procedure of which was MALPRACTICE), has a “delayed swallow”. So normally, when feeling fine, he has a “clearing cough”. When not feeling well, it becomes a more chronic cough which makes normal secretions harder to handle.as i watch him coughing his brains out and then turn purple at times because it’s too much for a delayed swallow- it’s time to evaluate. This morning my gut feeling said- put him on meds. An antibiotic that we keep on hand (working with his pulmonologist, we have a game plan) - so we started that this morning. In addition, we give him liquid benedryl (he has a g-tube) every 4 hours to help dry up secretions (that normal people can spit out or blow their noses ). And then also give respiratory treatments through a nebulizer that helps keep his lungs clear. Yes it’s a lot of work. Yes it’s a lot of stress.
