“Yeva.”
“Mother.”
That’s how they addressed each other. Every damn time. It made Yeva angry—maybe upset. Their stepmother wasn’t someone they’d let influence them. Words still hurt though, especially how much their stepmother means to their father, and their father meant everything to Yeva.
Back to the conversation at hand, Yeva and her usually talked when needed. Yeva called each time—optimistic to reunite their petty relationship but it’d be slapped back in their face. Enough was enough, but Yeva never knew when to stop.
“Are you stil watering plants?” Their stepmother spoke up after the much enjoyed silence. Fuck Yeva though. Now they had to answer. Swallowing softly, Yeva kept both hands on the small telephone. Yeva like their small flip phone much more than those big Iphones.
“Well?” Their stepmother asked, this time a bit more stern. However, Yeva still didn’t like it.
“Yes, I am.” They answered simply and before their mother wa about to speak—they interrupted. A burst of adrenaline shot through them and it caught up with their mouth.
”Not only do I water plants but I help them be cross-bred for different types of flowers. Some even are close to curing small illnesses like colds or sniffles. But it seems like…” Yeva trailed off—reconsidering what they were going to say but they blurted it out before their brain could decide.
“But it seems like I won’t be able to ever find a plant that cures your bitterness.” With that said, Yeva hung up.
Now here came the anxiety. Yeva instantly started to snap their fingers. It’s a thing they did out of anxiety. Their breathing quickened. For a split second they considered to call their stepmother back and apologize.
No, that’s not a smart choice they thought to themselves. But holy crap! I can’t breathe and I’m going to die! Why would I do that? They also thought. Both were conflicting but extremely loud. Yeva rubbed their temples, trying to calm their breathing. It was a bit hard though—so they decided to simply go to sleep. Crawling into their bed fully clothed and closed their eyes.

They couldn’t sleep.
iii
They’ve been crying for a while—can’t sleep when you’re crying.
They must’ve been a bit loud cause there was a knock on their door followed by a voice.
“Yeva—shelia. Listen, I called ya o’ couple of times ‘n I ‘unno if the anklebiters got you’re phone or—“
Before they could continue, Yeva was already at the door and they opened it slowly. Only showing a bit of themselves. They were embarrassed and didn’t want Mick Mundy to see them like this. Yeva looked up at him with puffy red eyes. They sniffled and ran a hand through their chocolate hair—pushing their curly bangs back.
“Holy shit—wot happened? Did somebody hurt you ‘cos if they did I’ll—“ Yeva shook their head and cut him short by raising a hand. Yeva scratched their neck and took a deep breath before speaking.
“No, no one hurt me. I just..I’m just upset. Over something silly. It’s nothing to worry about Mick.” Yeva didn’t dare glance up. Instead they leaned on the doorframe, hugging themselves. “Listen I just..I don’t know.” Yeva wanted him to go away. They loved him (read: platonic) but Yeva couldn’t stand him being there and seeing them all upset. Yeva opened their mouth to say one more thing but were buried in warmth. It confused them for a second but then they realized Mick was hugging them.
“Listen—I don’t know what’s goin’ on but.. I’m uh.. I’m here.. “ He stated a bit awkwardly. Yeva almost wanted to laugh. It was funny how he could be so caring yet so.. awkward. Although instead of laughing Yeva hugged back and cried into his shirt. They cried a bit before Mick walked them into their room and they sat down in silence. He just let Yeva lean on him and cry while patting their back gently.

Yeva knew they had to tell him. Or at least stop bottling all that shit up. Sitting up they glanced up at him and brushed hair away from their own face.
“Mike—I just. Mike, my step-mother makes me feel like utter shit.” They started, unwrapping themselves from his arms and going and sitting next to him.
“’m sorry.” He said—knowing that right now was not the time to talk too much. Which Yeva appreciated. They talked slowly and brung their knees to their chest.
“She makes me feel so..awful about my talent. My gardening abilities I mean.. you name it I can grow it. But she makes me feel like.. like.. it’s not even good. Not even just a bit okay. I mean god, for fucks sake Mike—I’m a gardener.” This is where they started to tear up again and soon fat tears rolled down their cheeks.
“Mike—I..I—I.. I’m a gardener. I’m not like her—she’s a business women or—or..or like her kids. Their either engineers or planning to be doctors or something. But no. I’m a gardener. I’m the one who tends to the crops like some—some..” Yeva choked back a sob and wiped their eyes.
“Like some labourer! And—A-And not to even mention—the way she puts it down my throat. Do you know what she said to me today?” Mick looked at them and shook his head. “She asked me ‘Are you still watering plants?’ like—like I’ve done it my whole life and I’ve accomplished nothing except water some water and grow some more! I-I’m..” Yeva buried their face in their hands and sobbed. “I’m a failure.”
Mick couldn’t believe his ears. He wasn’t sure what to say but he knew he had to say something. No fucking way was he going to let Yeva sit here and sob because they’ve been told they’re a failure. Wrapping a arm around their shoulder he pulled them close and patted down their hair soothingly.
“Yeva. Listen to me. You’re pretty damn smart. ‘nd you can’t lt anyone—‘specially you’re ignorant mum that you’re a failure.” At this point, Yeva looked up through tears. “I mean—c’mon you really can’t think you’re that much a failure. I haven’t ever seen anyone grow as good as you—‘nd you know damn well you have talent. I mean—‘m just ramblin’ but.. tha’ thing is Yeva, you’re an incredible person. With talent ‘n all. You can never let anyone make you feel awful about somethin’ you love.”
Mick was making some kind of hand motions, looking around the room through dimmed shades. “Sorry, ‘m just rambling but seriously! Not only that but you’re nice ‘n shit. You can even tolerate an ol’ bugger like me and I barely talk!” He coughed into his hand and looked back down at Yeva. “Trust me on this.”
Yeva let the words sink in and a small smile broke out on their dark complexion. “Did you know—when you talk you make funny hand motions. I think it’s only when you ramble but..” Yeva trailed off, snickering a bit. Mick flushed but smiled, chuckling.
“Now that you’re better, want to watch me shoot arrows at Jayden and Brian?”
“Hell yeah I do!”
