Reenadinna Woods on the Muckross estate, one of only three yew woodlands remaining in Europe. Yew trees were once abundant on the continent but there are now very few remaining. Way back in around the 1st century it was discovered that yew wood was the perfect material for enhancing longbows. The new powerful longbows became the weapon of choice in battle and longbow mania ensued. As a result most the yew trees in Europe were chopped down. Those which remain in the UK are mostly isolated in church yards, which make these yew forests extra special. Read more in @ernestjournal Issue 8.
