An analytical fanart of Siffrin from @articray ’s In Cages and Feathers ISAT AU; AKA: basically an excuse to research something for funsies!

Note: This is not a criticism, just my personal take on how to take more inspiration from real life creatures and their oddities, cause I like em a lot :)

Right so, getting into it, Ray’s drawings of Sif often have these spurs on the wings, which! Is technically true! Birds can have “spikes” on their wings as an offensive biological weapon, However! This is actually a very small minority of birds ~2%.

Here’s a paper from 1954 on kinds of wing spurs :)

I chose the Lapwings’ carpometacarpus position for the spurs since they match up with the size factor of Ray’s design,

What I think was misinterpreted as spurs in the first place is a bone called the “Alula” which is essentially the bird’s thumb! It has a very important role in aerodynamics and has to be covered with feathers to work, so I added that back in to this design.

Furthermore, I did sketches of how to interpret and draw bird wings, (here’s a post that I followed) One technique is to reference one’s hand, ‘S good for figuring out what the joints are doing, but the actual proportions are off,,,, and it hurts my wrist ¯\_(•v•)_/¯

My final take on the wing design and spur-placement, The two-feather floof is Very Important >_< /silly It denotes where the wing bends, the place where this “hand portion” begins!

Also Siffrin having a really scarred up throat from the repetition with the island name :( That’s gotta have some lasting impact on them wishcraft is not kind

I drew a couple of iterations for the cosmetic “feather” shaped pin Siffrin has, I think a version based on simplicity (one band across a Bulb-Gourd Style pin) is neat, also drew a way to simplify it with just a few lines.

I wanted to do more with the hat, especially considering that the typical wizard hat would probably just blow off siffrin’s head the moment he catches a gust of wind, so I thought it’d be neat to reference Wind Socks!

They’ve got stripes on em to measure the speed of the wind and hang loose to determine direction, things that come in handy when you fly a lot! Also gave them a chin strap, for obvious reasons, but they can hold it by that string to get some free movement in the sock, Maybe Frin can still take off their hat and determine the wind?
