60 years ago Lockheed engineer & Skunk Works manager Clarence “Kelly” Johnson developed the single seat A-12 “Oxcart” version of USAF/CIA triple-sonic reconnaissance aircraft. The Bulova Accutron Astronaut tuning fork wrist watch was choosen to be worn on the outside of the CIA pilots pressure suit in the harsh cockpit environment of the A12 “Cygnus” spyplane. 20 years ago, the SR-71 Blackbird version made its final flight after 35 years of duty. This 1964 Accutron Astronaut GMT watch sits on a Jacoby Bender Champion steel mesh bracelet. In December 2019, this vintage model of steel mesh bracelet was re-issued by Forstnerbands. The 1966 Carswell Airshow, held in conjunction with the Air Force Association's 20th anniversary convention.
The XB-70 Valkyrie, shown in center, made its only public appearance at this airshow. The first XB-70A, on display here, flew in September 1964, and it achieved Mach 3 flight in October 1965. The second Valkyrie first flew in July 1965, but in June 1966, it was destroyed following an accidental mid-air collision. The third Valkyrie was not completed.
It looks like an SR-71 but it’s a YF-12 simply amazing that they allowed the public to look inside of the cockpits. As aviation geek club points out. 1966 in conjunction with the Air Force Association (AFA) 20th anniversary convention. However, aircraft ID captions need some work- Flight line above the hangar – Aircraft (no tag) between the F-4 and F-102 is an F-106 – Third aircraft from right is an F-106, not an F-102 Lower left – that is a YF–12A, not an SR–71 — on the lower right the aircraft is a B-26K, not an A-37 — the X-15 is a full-scale mockup — The non-captioned rocket is a Thor Able.

Confer in the middle. Hal Confer was my Father’s hero from the B-58 and the SR 71 Confer was a very important man in the SR-71 program. Posted by Linda Sheffield.

This type of watch was worn by CIA test pilots flying the A12 (1962), NASA test pilots flying the X-15 (1959-1968) and astronauts Wally Schirra (1962), Gordon Cooper (1963), Virgil Grissom & John Young (Gemini III) and Norman Thagard on STS-7 Challenger in 1983.
