This weekend I was lucky enough to attend #GenCon14. The first national conference for students on gender issues, hosted by The USI and The YFactor facilitated through The National Women's Council.
We discussed a wide range of issues from Heteronormativity and gender binaries, to Trans* activism and pro-choice politics. The speakers were so knowledgeable and committed to their activism that it truly inspired everyone in attendance.
Words cannot describe how refreshing it was to see people of every age, and from every walk in life coming together, leaving prescribed gender norms at the door and engaging in thought-provoking debates. Gender, sexuality and conversation were all so fluid and there was such acceptance for everyone, no matter what their expression or identity was, which really hit home for me how wonderfully accepting the student population can be.
I walk away from the weekend with a much greater knowledge and have been inspired by everyone I have met, to engage further with my activism and ensure I continue pushing Social Justice issues to the forefront whenever possible.
