It was late in the afternoon but you finally finished your shift for the day. You were tired down to the bone but that did not stop you from clocking off from work as fast as you could and rushing to get outside of the office building. You waved a few of your work friends goodbye when you exited, the straps of your bag threatening to fall off your arm as you struggled to keep it steady on your shoulder. Your feet were aching as you walked across the carpark, your hand digging into your purse to fish around for your phone. You were stuck taking public transport again and you wanted to check the timetables. You glanced at your phone for only a brief second before you heard the loud sound of a bike horn not far behind you.
Your shoulders jumped up to your ears as you yelped in surprise, your legs ready to launch you a few feet in the air. You spun around with a disgruntled look, ready to give whoever honked at you a piece of your mind. You stopped short just as you opened your mouth to yell, the fierce look marring your features disappearing in an instance when you realised who it was behind you.
Crow waved at you from beside his parked duel runner, a big smile on his face and his eyes just as bright as he beckoned you to come closer.
“Hey, good looking! Over here!” he called.
Your shoulders sagged as you let out a big sigh. A small smile tugged at your lips as you trotted over to him, careful to look out for oncoming traffic as other cars of your coworkers slowly filtered out of the small and cramped carpark. As soon as you reached Crow, you raised your hand halfheartedly smacked his arm, fingers digging into his shoulder pad as you tried to playfully shove him. Your attempt made him laugh.
“Ow-Hey!” he protested with a breezy chuckle.
“You scared the living daylights out of me!” you replied, shoving him again one more time for good measure.
Crow rolled his shoulders with a nonchalant shrug. “Well, how else was I supposed to get your attention? You walked right past me without looking up.”
You awkwardly scratched at the round swell of your cheek as you felt heat nip at your skin. You chuckled softly as a little, flustered smile tugged at your lips.
“Really? S-Sorry.”
Crow waved his hand. “Ah don’t worry about it. I wanted to surprise you anyway.”
He reached into a spare compartment of his duel runner, Blackbird, and pulled out the spare helmet nestled inside. He offered it to you with a grin.
“Hop on. Let’s go for a ride.”
You took the helmet before looking back at Crow. Before Crow could secure his own helmet, you stepped forward to place a quick kiss to his cheek. He paused when he felt the shape of your mouth brush against his skin.
“Thanks for picking me up” you said. “I know you’ve been very busy lately.”
With duel tournament season in full swing you saw less and less of Crow, his days becoming busier working on his duel runner with his teammates and running through practice duels. You didn’t expect him to come pick you up, but you appreciated the gesture. Crow smiled as he tipped his head towards you.
“I wanted to see you” Crow replied, awkwardly rubbing at the back of his neck as his eyes flickered away from you briefly.
The bashful gesture made you giggle. He shook it off, eyes coming back to focus on you. He patted the seat of his runner. “Come on, hop aboard and we’ll be off.”
You leaned in again to give him another peck to the cheek before taking his offered hand. He smiled before helping you onto the back of his runner. You finally put on your helmet as Crow finished securing his. He sat in front of you and you immediately wrapped your arms around his waist when you saw him reaching throttle. He grinned as you squeezed him tight around the waist.
“Hold on tight.”
Those were the last words you heard before your heart lurched in your chest and wind rushed by your ears as you took off down the street.
AN; Ughh, little rusty but the worms want me to write sooo.. Trying to start like simple with this before I go barreling into thd freak shit I crave
→ Something about Kaiba is when you begin dating he was so.. careful with you and intimacy, almost to a frustrating degree.
→ He’s a powerful man who knows how to get what he wants, but when it comes to intimacy and emotions he himself doesn’t know what he wants!
→ Kaiba would rather die than make you uncomfortable, the mere thought of crossing your boundaries makes him cringe. So he just.. doesn’t try.
→ I mean, he tries in the relationship of course. He plans fancy dinners, always gets you lovely gifts ranging from expensive jewelry to that plush you had been eyeing the last you two went out.
→ But he never really tries to do anything intimate, at least, he never initiates it, and when you take the lead he becomes rigid and stiff.
→ Trying to actually get Kaiba to be physically affectionate with you, even in private, is like pulling teeth.
→ As a child he wasn’t allowed to be vulnerable with others, not by Gozaburo or himself, so trying to open up to you is hard.
→ You understand his distaste with PDA in public, he has an image to maintain after all, but when in private it can become annoying how he almost avoids you.
→ The first time you actually got Kaiba to just hold your hand he hadn’t been fully present, fatigue eating at his mind, dragging his feet as you pulled him from his office to his room.
→ The next morning he’d been embarrassed you saw him in such a state, burying himself in his work and avoiding eye contact with you.
→ Then there was the first time you finally got him to cuddle..
You had somehow managed to drag Kaiba away from his desk, currently sprawled over the man on one of the sofas within his office.
He was tense beneath you, you could feel it in how his arms awkwardly wrapped around your waist, hands hovering just over your back. Kaiba wasn’t even looking at you, his chin tilted up, gaze trained on the ceiling.
You had your ear pressed to his chest, Kaiba’s heart pounding in your ear, his breathing heavy and at times stuttering when you’d move atop him.
Kaiba’s legs shifted, a deep sigh escaping him as he tried to get more comfortable. You were glad he was at least trying for you, even if at times it felt like he wasn’t.
“Seto,” You began, Kaiba’s gaze flicking to you before his gaze returned to the ceiling, his cheeks growing pinker, “This okay?” You asked softly, hands moving to slip into Kaiba’s hair, arms wrapped around his neck.
Kaiba tensed when the pads of your fingers pressed against his scalp, hands gripping your shirt before he relaxed, at least as best he could. He subconsciously tilted his head back into your hands, lips parting as he released a breath neither you nor him had realized he was holding.
Kaiba nodded slowly, lips pressing into a thin line before be murmured a quiet, “Yes,” You could feel his hands press against your lower back, feeling the fabric of your shirt, “Yes, this is fine..” His tone was soft and strained, unlike the usual confidence Kaiba held in his voice.
You found his nervousness almost.. cute. It would be if you didn’t know how badly the man wished to run off and bury himself into his work, to hide away from you and his feelings in this moment.
Thank you @true-deru for talking with me about this cute, funny little idea. I'm so glad I was able to finally write it. Let me know what you guys think, I was thinking about doing something similair with Reiji and Thomas Arclight/IV.
Comments and reblogs highly appreciated.

You stuffed the plump seam of your lips between the pinch of your teeth, eyes glued to your phone screen as you browsed the internet. It was a cold Saturday morning and you were still lazing on the couch, a plush throw rug bundled in your lap and a hot drink perched on the coffee table. You tapped your chin in thought as you continued to scroll on your phone, the pads of your fingers scraping against the old, worn out protective screen of your phone as you internet shopped. Your phone was really old, ancient according to your boyfriend, and you desperately needed a new one.
But you couldn’t find the one you wanted for the right price. You had come across one you really liked but it was just a tad too expensive for your budget. You chewed on the dry skin clinging to the corner of your lips as you started to do some mental calculations. Maybe if you went on a plan? Or settled for one a little cheaper. You stared at the screen, the bright light reflecting in your eyes and you almost threw your hands up in frustration.
“Damn these rising inflations” you mumbled with a soft huff.
The short puff of air that breezed past your lips stirred small wisps of your hair, blowing them out of your eyes as you reached for your hot drink and took a long, loud sip. You heard footsteps echo down the hallway and you almost flinched when you heard your partner say your name from just over your shoulder.
“What are you muttering about?”
You swallowed down your mouthful of hot drink, almost sputtering in surprise as you whipped your head around to see Kaiba standing right behind you. If it wasn’t for his steady hand placed between your shoulder blades, you were sure you would have spilled your drink all over your lap. Instead, you were able to place your mug safely back to the coffee table, an idea sudden;y sparking in your mind when you drew your eyes back to Kaiba. He was smart and good with numbers, surely he could help you out. You didn’t hesitate as you drew yourself up onto your knees, a bright and beaming smile lighting up your face.
“Seto! Just the man I wanted to see!” you exclaimed.
He raised an eyebrow in question, a smidge confused at your sudden excitement as you perched yourself on your knees, the fluffy blanket in your lap slipping and pooling around your thick legs as you straighten your back. He drew his attention to your phone as you practically shoved it into his hands, tapping on the screen as you showed him your current predicaments.
“I was just comparing prices for a new phone” you began before Kiaba interjected with what sounded like a huff of relief.
“Finally decided to get rid of this fossil?” he said, his jab almost sounding teasing.
You rolled your eyes so hard they almost disappeared into the back of your head, a sarcastic laugh falling from your lips as you drew out each syllable.
“Ha, ha, very funny Seto.”
You lightly pushed his chest and he didn’t even move an inch, eyes tracing the movement of your fingers as you drew them back to your phone screen.
“I was just comparing prices” you repeated. “And I wanted your opinion. Which one do you think is better?”
There was a soft pinch between his brow as he thought about it, fingers swiping across the screen as he silently read what was on the screen. It only took him a moment before his gaze flickered back to you.
“Which one did you want?” he inquired.
You shuffled on your knees and pushed yourself a little higher, looking at your phone screen at an awkward angle as you swiped the screen back to the one you wanted.
“This one” you said. “It’s got what I need. But its too expensive. If I could find one a little cheaper that does the same thing-”
“Hmm, then I’ll just get it for you.”
Your brain short circuited for a few, brief seconds. Your expression turned shocked, large does eyes threatening to pop out of your head as you gaped up at him in mild confusion.
“I…Huh?”
That was the only intelligent thing you could muster up. Kaiba didn’t pay you any mind as he gave you back your phone just so he could fish his own out of the pocket of his pants and start tapping away on it. He turned his back to you as he continued to type and it took you another moment to gather your thoughts.
“Wait, no. You’re not allowed to do that.”
You sprung into action, almost completely launching yourself over the back of the couch as you wrapped your arms around his shoulders and pulled yourself up. He didn’t seem to be bothered at all by your weight as your plump figure clung to the broad expanse of his back, chin hooked over his shoulder so you could see what he was doing. He wasn’t joking. He already had the phone you wanted up on his screen.
“Wait, don’t spend your money on me!” you griped, fingers digging into the back of his shirt to try and gain his attention.
He only spared you a cursory glance before he continued to type. Your arms dangled over his shoulders as you tried desperately to reach for his phone but you fell woefully short. It made the corners of his lips crack into a ghost of a smile.
“You want it, don’t you?”
“Yes but-”
“Then I don’t see the problem” Kaiba mused.
One last click and it was already too late. It was paid for. A loud sigh pushed past your lips as you bunted your head against his shoulder, lips tugging into a frown as you sulked. You sagged in defeat, slowly sliding back down into your spot as you gathered your blanket into your lap once more. You didn’t expect him to do that. You weren’t trying to coerce him into getting you anything and now you felt a little guilty about it. You had money, you could get it yourself.
“You don’t need to buy me things” you grumbled.
Kaiba placed a hand on your head, gently ruffling your hair as the soft wisps curled around his fingertips.
“You’re too frugal with your money. And I know I don’t need to. I wanted to” he replied.
You turned your head as he leaned down, face hovering closer as you slowly lost the pout tugging at your lips. It felt a little silly to be this upset with him. You knew he was only just trying to help and make it a little easier for you. But you were horrible at accepting gifts, always arguing that you didn’t need anything. It took you another long moment to let his gesture sink in, a smile tilting your lips as you leaned in close and kissed his cheek.
“Thank you, Seto. That helps a lot” you said, arms coiling around his neck as you hugged him.
A smile tugged at the corners of his lips as you clung to him again
“You’re welcome. If it makes you feel better, it didn’t even make a dent in my savings.”
Reupload because I didn’t realize how Tumblr works.
I’m terribly sorry to those who enjoyed the fic and it was suddenly nuked from their likes
I haven’t wrote or posted a fanfic in ages. I’m also not all too familiar with Tumblr in terms of posting fanfiction, so please bare with me (;´∀`)
D-does anyone still read YGO fanfics...?
This takes place shortly after Atem’s father takes him to the ancient tomb to pray for forgiveness for creating the Millennium Items.
This is a work of fiction. If you get scrapes or bruises, please don’t wrap yourself in leaves - Sincerely, a hospital staff.
‘Please, spare my son. Do not punish him for the misdeeds of his father. Please do not have my son face any calamities.’
A part of me couldn’t help but recall the memories of my father as I lay motionless on the Nile’s riverbank. The vast, starry sky above me stretched far and beyond. Overwhelmed by the recent events that unravelled in the ancient tomb, allured by the twilight, I snuck out of the palace to find a moment of solace. Even though the full moon was luminous, the nature of the night was that all was covered with a veil of shade. A slip on uneven ground and, before I knew it—
“Goodness, that was quite the tumble.”
I jolted up at the hushed and humored voice cutting me from my thoughts. But in my rush, a twinge instantly ran up and down my arms and legs. Grimacing, a grunt escaped me as I realized and sat with my scrapes and bruises.
“The scenery down here is beautiful, but I don’t think it’s worth rushing recklessly for.” A thick and well-worn cape hooded over your entire silhouette. I kept my guard as you stepped closer, but a light feeling of relief eased my nerves as I noticed that you didn’t seem any older than I was. Stopping in your stride, leaving a gap of distance between us, you settled down in front of me. Perhaps you had sensed my anxiety, but the space you left between us was just enough to make your intentions known without encroaching on my personal space.
“I may not look like it, but I hope to one day become a doctor-scribe.”
Raising a hand, you closed your eyes and started to recite an incantation, casting a spell over my fresh wounds. I was in awe by your choice of action. Even though my injuries were superficial, you felt it was still worth a conjuration.
When the chant came to an end, you broke the silence with an apologetic tone, “Though I said I hope to become a doctor-scribe, I’m still a student in training.” Reaching into the woven bag concealed beneath your mantle, you pulled out some materials before asking for my permission to physically patch what was left of my scratches.
The spell and the dedication in making sure what was left of the accident was well mended, both sentiments gave me a great deal of comfort I couldn’t quite express in words.
‘Remember, everyone falls once in a while. That’s what makes us stronger.’
As a gentle zephyr brushed past me, it resurfaced the buried memories of a time long gone. The blow of the calm breeze carried along with it the echoes of when my father still consoled and encouraged me.
Yes… It is important to stand when I fall, but it gave me great comfort that I didn’t have to rise alone.
“And there we go!” Patting the wrappings, your cheer had taken me out of my solemn thoughts.
“Thank you for helping me.” Never the best in casual conversations, I was careful to not let an awkward silence settle. Quietly and hesitantly, I found something to say, “... You have an incredible affinity with magic and healing.”
A gentle chuckle sounded from you, “No, not exactly. Rather than purely relying on my innate abilities, I call to the gods and draw my knowledge of the lands so that they may aid me.” As you turned your head, I followed your gaze up to the full and brilliant moon, “Khonsu— that is, the moon, when invoked, protects travellers and has a connection with healing. And these agapanthuses— lily of the Nile as they call it, when used correctly, their leaves have anti-inflammatory properties and can act as bandages.”
With your detailed explanation, I understood the depths of your dedication to your studies. It was your passion and your pride. Having witnessed and heard your proficiency in your duty reinvigorated me in working on mine.
“The flower is also said to be a symbol of–” Stopping yourself mid-sentence, it was as if you caught yourself from saying something you shouldn’t. Nonchalantly, you waved it off, “Ahh… Nevermind it. I shouldn’t be teasing you.”
It would have been a lie to say I wasn’t curious, but you didn’t seem to hold any ill will so I paid it no mind. Instead, I took in the touch of earth and flora, the scent of the night air, the steady flow of the Nile, and the moon that floated far above.
This was the exact sensation I was looking for— what had led me away from the palace. It led me here so I could have this minute of respite.
Just as the moment started to settle, you turned to address me once more, “It’s getting late. You should get going.”
“Uh… huh?”
At my puzzlement, you gave a soft giggle. “Not many folks around these parts can wear linen as lightweight or as well kept as yours.”
Whenever I slipped away from the palace, I ascertained that I presented myself in a way as to not stand out, but you easily caught on. I still had much and more to learn.
Pulling away the cloth that draped over your person, you fixed it over my shoulders and styled it in place. Without the curtain over your form, it was far easier to make out your features. And with your appearance accented by the ethereal moonlight, I could only stare dumbfoundedly.
“There we go. Hopefully, this should help so you won’t catch any malicious eyes on your way back.”
“W–wait.” I stammered momentarily to gather my thoughts, “Please, may I know your name?”
Giving a quick pause, you glanced away for a moment as you made your decision before shaking your head in refusal. “I’m sorry,” you started silently, “I don’t think I should just yet.”
Having just met me and deduced my social standing in that short time, your caution wasn’t unfounded. As much as I dreamed of seeing a peaceful world where status didn’t matter— where everyone could live freely, as it currently stands, I was still the royal prince— that I'd one day become the intermediary for the gods and the people.
There were far more repercussions for you than there would ever be for me.
“But…”
A small seed of hope sprouted within me as you interjected with the indication of another possibility.
“If you ever decide to return the cloak, I’ll be here to greet you.” A tender expression painted your face, “Though, try not to take the same path down as you did tonight. Otherwise, you’ll miss the beautiful sights the other roads have to offer.”
“Yes. Thank you.” Without realizing it, I found myself smiling back, “I’ll keep that in mind.”
Thanks! I don’t mind waiting. So...how would the yugioh characters and GX ( yugi, yami,Joey, seto, jaden, and chazz ) react to finding out that thier dorky yet sweet crush has wings? Kinda like Angel wings. I got the idea from “ after dark “ by asian kung-fu generation. I like to see that the reader lend a helping hand or wing...like give them a ride if they are late to some place or just want a flight ride for fun XD and use her wing to shield her friends or crush from the rain if they forgot thier umbrella, letting them rest their head on her wings? I hope this was ok.
Hello @blackace1993 ! I do apologize that this took so long to get to, but I really do appreciate the patience~! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did with writing it~! I decided to only do the characters I feel that I can portray the best, so hopefully you enjoy it! As always, we always want to thank you for the love and support for this blog~!
For Yami Yugi, he’d find it somewhat befitting of his crush to have angel wings. To him, not only do they just hold an air of kind and gentle light, but initially gave not just him, but many others the illusion that they were an angel sent down from heaven.
When he witnesses her acts of kindness he can’t help but feel a sense of greed overtake his heart. He won’t outright admit it, but because of his past he tends to be a touch protective / possessive of his crush. Even going as far as attending any and all events with them.
He’s gotten into the habit of calling them his dove, and on occasion he would teasingly call them his sweet dove.
He personally dislikes the idea of trying to hitch a ride from them, but he does love to lean against them whenever it’s a rainy day or whenever he’s feeling lost within himself.
ᴊᴀᴅᴇɴ ʏᴜᴋɪ
Absolutely adores their wings.
He loves to call them his winged kuriboh, and honestly everyone at that point knows them as Jaden’s kuriboh.
He absolutely loves flying in the skies with them, to him it’s a sense of escapism from the real world.
A whole bunch of flying in the air dates.
If others try to talk about his crush on them he’ll adamantly deny it with flushed red cheeks.
He’ll most definitely be the one to keep others in line, especially from taking advantage of their kindness. He may tend to fall under the two faced category by many of their friends, but in his crush’s eyes they only see him as a sweet puppy like man.
ꜱᴇᴛᴏ ᴋᴀɪʙᴀ
Adamantly will refuse the fact that they have wings and will chalk it up to him being on hallucigens.
He makes an offhand comment about how strange it was for a human to possess wings which not only spurs the scientific movement, but triggers a harsh protective streak with the older Kaiba.
He’ll come to regret the moment he let those words fall, but he doesn’t regret the fact that his crush-- as much as he’d like to deny having one-- is now living with him.
Despite liking the rain and standing outside to watch it, he’s become accustomed to them showing up out of nowhere to shield him from the pelting droplets.
On more than one occasion his crush can be seen roaming the hallways with Kaiba’s signature long white coat draped comfortably around their shoulders.
I have recieved prompt 12 from the wheel of wonders and I'd like to ask for Jesse Anderson from ygo gx pls 😁
Hello hello~! Thank you so much for your patience~! I’m so sorry it’s taken so long for this to come out ;; but we really appreciate the love and support~! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did with writing it!
It’s not a surprise that you find yourself seated cozily alone watching the classic holiday re-runs.
The thought of actually spending time with family and friends sounded immensely pleasing, however with your move and starting anew all alone the prospect of having the warm glee of familiar faces failed to bestow themselves upon you.
Thus here you are dressed in your comfiest clothes with cookies baking away in the oven as you leisurely sip your hot cocoa.
It’s only when you receive a knock on the door that startles you out of your thoughts. Hesitantly, you move towards the door before peering into the peephole.
Yet just as you began to decipher the energetic human their voice-- though muffled-- clearly resonates into your heart as you recognize the voice of your closest friend since moving.
Immediately, you open the door to see messy teal strands tucked endearingly under a beanie. Flushed cheeks and mirth filled grey-green eyes immediately sparking a thousand times brighter after landing on you.
You can’t explain what happens next, but the simplest thing that comes to mind is that you’ve never felt warmer and safer than at that moment.
In the end, you find yourself cozily tucked against his chest with the background noise of old nostalgic holiday specials running along. Your kitchen was a disaster zone, and the room was beyond saving, but overall the man before you helped make your lonely Christmas into one that was well worth the move.
Due to upheavals in my personal life I’ve been unable to write much of anything for several months, so, to help get back into the swing of things I figured I’d make some presents for some people I appreciate here on tumblr. You could also say these are very very, very, very late Christmas gifts. The first one is for @readerinsertfanfiction who is not only an amazing writer and someone I admire, but also someone who wrote me a couple fantastic drabbles not long ago.
I know it’s February but I set this during spring time because I’m desperate for winter to be over before I break my ankle on ice while walking to work bc why not. I also kinda tried to give this a Not Quite Unrequited vibe while still making it it’s own thing, so hopefully you like it, Rif <3
Yugi took note of the way his brother was holding himself; arms crossed tight over his chest, eyes locked firmly on the ground, and lips pursed in a pout unlike any he had seen on Yami before. Yugi was struggling between wanting to laugh and actually feeling sympathy for his big brother.
Instead, the younger man put a comforting hand on Yami’s shoulder, “Hey, you don’t have to be so nervous! Just think of it like any other conversation, you guys have talked a million times before!”
He was glad to feel Yami’s muscles relax a little under his hand, though it only really served to make Yami start shifting his feet in a one-step dance of restlessness. Fidgeting was rare sign in Yami and Yugi fully started to appreciate how shot his nerves must be.
“But this isn’t just any other conversation, Aibou,” Yami muttered and if the sounds of nature in the park were any louder, Yugi might not have heard him. “I’ve practiced what I might say in my mind for over a week, yet I still feel no more prepared to say it face to face than I did two weeks ago.”
That made sense, Yami always did his best thinking on his feet. He was amazing at plans and strategies, but this wasn’t exactly the same as putting good card combinations in your Duel Monster’s deck.
Yugi felt his lips curl into a frown as he turned and peeked out from behind the line of trees they were conveniently settled behind. As always when the weekend weather was nice (and the gang had no plans to hang out) you were there, enjoying the outdoors as you worked on your tablet. Your usual bench was a bit isolated from the main part of the park, set off in the grass some ways away from the play ground and flat field others frolicked through. It was also surrounded by a spattering of trees, so a thick umbrella of leaves protected you from the sun, though your favorite hat did that job well enough. This was the third time Yami had passed through the park when you were here- only to powerwalk passed you without so much as a wave or awkward hello, despite his previous intentions of stealing some one-on-one time with you.
Living up to the ‘ray of positivity’ title his friend’s bestowed upon him, Yugi quickly though of a solution to get Yami over there and under those trees with you. “Okay, new plan. What ever you’ve been practicing in your head- forget it, throw it out!”
Yami finally lifted his eyes from the uneven grass to blink at him, “What?”
Yugi grabbed his brother by the arm and started tugging, “You always come up with your best plans in the spur of the moment, so stop overthinking what you’re going to say and just go over there! It’ll come to you when you need it, I’m sure!” Yami’s eyes went wide as Yugi actually started (gently) shoving him in the direction of your spot.
“Aibou, I-”
“No buts!”
“I didn’t say but!”
“Just get over there!”
Another shove with surprising strength behind it and Yami was stumbling out into the open. You hadn’t noticed, him being too far away and you too engrossed in your tablet. Yami stood frozen, like a cat caught climbing the curtains, until he let out a breath and stood straighter. That literal push was helpful, and just like other points in his life, Yami found strength in his brother’s encouragement. He could do this, it wasn’t like talking to you was anything new! It would be fine if he could forget the fact that this was the only time you two had spent alone...and push exactly why he was wanting to talk with you alone to the back of his mind.
Yami watched your bench for a moment, felt himself smile at how at peace you looked. When the breeze picked up and swept through the park, he saw the way it caught and lifted the strands of your hair. Your eyes closed against nature’s intrusion as you tucked some flowing strands behind your ear and Yami felt something warm and fluttering swell in his chest at the almost cinematic sight. That bubbly heat wasn’t new to him, he had actually grown quite accustomed to it the last few weeks. Warmth clawing up his neck and face when you smiled at him, head feeling light and stupid the few times he managed to get a laugh from you, how he wanted bury himself in the moments where you talked about your passions with that look in your eyes. All of these were signs even he couldn’t ignore.
He had tried, gods had he tried, but he hadn’t managed it for long, he couldn’t. Couldn’t deny the way his eyes followed you like a smitten school boy, or how he scowled in disappointment (and perhaps a drop of jealousy) when he couldn’t snatch the seat next to you, nor how he longed for you to look back at him with similar feelings hidden in your gaze.
With another deep breath, Yami finally moved his feet in something other than nervous fidgeting. He could practically feel Yugi’s eyes on his back as he took strong and sure strides towards you. He passed a young couple on a walk as his mind worked through encouraging words. He tucked his hand in his pockets for a bit of security when he thought of how you would look up at him and greet him in your usually fashion. He took more calming breaths as even that mild imagery made his face heat up. He was closing in on you now, all he had to do was call out and wave and he would be one step closer to everything he had been planning and-
And without breaking stride Yami spun on his heel in a sharp U turn, stormed for a few hot-faced paces, and planted his butt firmly on a bench that was definitely not yours.
He was staring forcefully at the ground again, lips tight in annoyance, and fists clenched over his knees so tight the knuckles were already whitening. He knew he heard Yugi’s voice carried to him on the wind, but at the moment his mind was too busy scolding his love-struck cowardice.
Back in their hiding spot, Yugi huffed, wishing his beloved brother was in reach for a good shaking. “For the love of...”
Now, Yugi was not usually one for acting on impulse, but seeing his brother look so frustratingly hesitant made him act on the first plan that came to mind. Yami just needed a little push, that’s all.
Yugi ran out into the field, put his hands around his mouth like a megaphone, and in the best possible impersonation of his brother’s baritone he could muster, he yelled your name.
On the lonely bench, Yami’s heart sank when he heard a voice (trying to sound like his??) shout your name so loudly it carried across he park. His head snapped up in time to see Yugi retreating back to their previous hiding spot, darting out of sight- but not before the young man flashed him a thumbs up.
A few choice words to hurl at his brother ran through his mind, before Yami heard the voice that made a fresh wave of bubbly heat start in his chest.
“Yami? Is that you?”
Taking an almost audible gulp, Yami turned his head towards you sitting not far across the field. He prayed his dark skin would hide the blush he knew was scorching his face.
“Hello,” the tone was flat and awkward as he lifted his hand in an equally awkward gesture.
You didn’t seem to mind, or maybe you did and were trying to spare him further embarrassment, because you nodded in greeting with a half smile. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”
“I was- I” Yami cleared his throat in a hurry, “I was just taking a walk.” Somehow through the haze of panic and mortification he managed to stand up and start walking towards you. Of course he noted how his legs felt like jelly and his stride was likely very odd looking as he closed the distance. “I see you’re enjoying the nice day,” he observed, scrambling for any start to a conversation.
You nodded, “Just until it gets too hot anyway, we won’t have many more cool day like this with summer getting closer.”
“Right. I’m sure Anzu will try to get us to go to the water park when it gets hot.”
When you huffed in bemused laughter he felt some of his tension ease, especially when you said, “Probably, so I’m definitely going to enjoy the spring days while I can. Hey, you want to sit down?”
He found his lips lifting in a smile as you scooted over a bit and patted the newly freed spot beside you. He took it, glad to give his jelly legs a rest, though they were getting better with every passing moment.
“What are you working on? If you don’t mind me asking.”
And just like that you two fell into easy conversation. It didn’t take long for Yami to forget that he was alone with you for the first time, in a nice private setting. Rather it felt like any other day: you and the rest of the gang coming over for an anime marathon, all of you going to the arcade, or playing Monster World at Ryou’s house. It was...simple. Well, almost, but it was getting easier with every word and sentence.
Of course, he eventually realized that the words to tell you the deeper things in his heart weren’t coming, like Yugi thought they would. Yami wasn’t even able to conjure up the speech he had planned when he took a second to think about it.
Then again, maybe it just wasn’t the right time. Maybe this was all he needed for now. Some time between the two of you, one on one. Something simple, though no less special. Something to help ease him into the things he wanted to say someday.
Yes, this was more than enough right now. He could tell you those deeper feelings held in his heart another day, right now he was more than content to sit by your side and enjoy your smile, your voice, and your company.
