“Brushes?” You ask, taking off the last of the plastic wrapping.
“Yes!” Tobio nods enthusiastically. “You’ve been talking about wanting some.”
“Yes, baby,” you hesitate. “For my makeup.”
“Are they different?” He asks, eyeing the kit of children’s paintbrushes in your hands.
“Well, yeah. But it’s the thought that counts, right?” You try to make the best of it.
“No,” he shakes his head. “They’re the wrong ones. I’ll make it right!”
“You don’t have to! I do have brushes; I just wanted to upgrade.”
“No, if I’m going to be a great boyfriend, I’m going to have to stand up for my mistakes!”
Amazon, it turns out, has a package of sixty-two different brushes. You don’t dare ask for the price, not with the way Tobio is grinning as he hands them to you. They’re brushes, and yes, they’re about the same quality as the ones you’ve used before, so you’ll surely do well with them. Still… You had thought about upgrading to a more expensive set.
“There are so many of them,” you say, which is true. “I won’t run out of them soon.” You lean in to kiss him. “Thank you, love. But you don’t have to go overboard every time I mention something!”
“I don’t,” he assures you. “You know I’m often in my own head, so I wanted to do something nice when I remembered.”
That year, you agree on sending each other a few inspiration links for your anniversary.
Tobio isn’t hard to shop for; he loves everything volleyball- or sports-related, but you lack the expertise when it comes to certain products, so it works.
Until you find not one, but five different packages at the foot of your bed.
“We agreed on one present!”
“Yes,” he nods. “But they weren’t that expensive and you deserve everything and more.”
Doubt creeps up the back of your neck. Your links had been products you hadn’t been willing to splurge on. Maybe for a pro-athlete they didn’t register as expensive, but- You stop, halfway through unpacking the first one.
“Hinata showed it to me,” Tobio explains proudly. “He said it’s called a dupe. You get the same thing for less than half the price.”
“Only it’s not the same thing, is it?” You ask, careful to keep your voice even. “Do you… You like saving, right?”
“Who doesn’t?” Tobio asks, legs crossed as he watches you. “Wait? Did I do it wrong?”
“You like the Mikasa brand, right?” You clear your throat. “They make good balls.”
“The Molten are good, too.”
“Imagine I’d gift you a cheap kids' version from the toy store,” you point out. “I would save a fortune, and a ball is a ball, right?”
His jaw drops. Understanding seems to have hit him like a serve straight to the face.
Before you can gather yourself, Tobio’s scrambling off the bed, grabbing your presents.
“These are wrong,” he insists. “They… they are for Hinata. I mean, Yachi. I mean, I got your present… in the car.”
“You don’t own a car,” you point out, “Tobio, let’s just-”
“No!” He all but stomps his foot. “I’m a terrible boyfriend.”
“You’d be a terrible boyfriend if you left me alone in bed on our anniversary,” you point out with a laugh. “How about we go have breakfast and do a little shopping tour after?”
His shoulders slump. “But-”
“You know what I’d really love?” You ask, leaning forward. “A kiss from the prettiest setter in the whole wide world. I don’t know if he wants to give me one, though.”
“You’re sneaky,” Tobio relents, dropping the presents. “I still feel bad.”
“Good,” you say, pulling him back into bed. “That means we can work on it.”
