Not a request, an actual question here.

What's your stance on AI? I beta for several fandoms, including TF, and one of my authors has asked me to beta something they wrote on GlimmerFic. I'm hesitant because it looks like it's AI based. I genuinely don't understand why any author would even want put their work in an AI.

I’m anti-AI period. I don’t like it. I get irrationally angry when the stupid assistant thing on google now tries to start up a conversation because I tried to look up something to verify my word usage and it thinks I want its opinion. I don’t. I never do.

I’ve never heard of that particular one, but I have heard all the excuses people come up with for using it and honestly, none of them are valid. Saying they’re bad writers or they have trouble expressing themself in words. Practice. It’s a craft and you have to learn it. No one writes something perfect and flawless every time and especially not first starting out. I’d rather read something real with heart and emotion and a bajillion typos than some formulaic slop made by AI. Look at my old stuff on FFN. It’s awful. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I was having fun, at least.

You’re allowed to write badly. You’re allowed to make typos, forget words and have to string together vague questions into a search engine because that word is right there and you have no idea what it is right this second, to write yourself into a corner because you have no clue where you’re going with a fic, but hey, you’re enjoying the trip and that’s why deus ex machina exists. At least the story is human. It makes you feel something. AI can only badly mimic what gets fed into it. It can create a hollow echo of the real thing that can’t evoke the same depth because AI can’t understand it.

I get a little salty about this and about how authors tend to get treated in general

AI will never respect writing nor authors. Look at what AI firms are doing to books. They're taking masses of books, feeding them to their AI machine and then burning them. I want to emphasize this: BURNING THEM! They have no respect for the written word, authors of any kind and there's literally no excuse to use or tolerate it!

in this era of constant performances and people being scared of being perceived as anything less than perfect for fear of ridicule or abandonment given how anything less than perceived “perfection” (particular on the internet, but also in society) yields that ridicule or abandonment. Let it be known that you can do things poorly and that doesn’t make you a lesser person.

An amateur is someone who does something because they love it. 

Amateur comes from Latin amare, which is "to love".

“Brushes?” You ask, taking off the last of the plastic wrapping.

“Yes!” Tobio nods enthusiastically. “You’ve been talking about wanting some.”

“Yes, baby,” you hesitate. “For my makeup.”

“Are they different?” He asks, eyeing the kit of children’s paintbrushes in your hands.

“Well, yeah. But it’s the thought that counts, right?” You try to make the best of it.

“No,” he shakes his head. “They’re the wrong ones. I’ll make it right!”

“You don’t have to! I do have brushes; I just wanted to upgrade.”

“No, if I’m going to be a great boyfriend, I’m going to have to stand up for my mistakes!”

Amazon, it turns out, has a package of sixty-two different brushes. You don’t dare ask for the price, not with the way Tobio is grinning as he hands them to you. They’re brushes, and yes, they’re about the same quality as the ones you’ve used before, so you’ll surely do well with them. Still… You had thought about upgrading to a more expensive set. 

“What do you think?”

“There are so many of them,” you say, which is true. “I won’t run out of them soon.” You lean in to kiss him. “Thank you, love. But you don’t have to go overboard every time I mention something!”

“I don’t,” he assures you. “You know I’m often in my own head, so I wanted to do something nice when I remembered.”

That year, you agree on sending each other a few inspiration links for your anniversary. 

Tobio isn’t hard to shop for; he loves everything volleyball- or sports-related, but you lack the expertise when it comes to certain products, so it works. 

Until you find not one, but five different packages at the foot of your bed. 

“We agreed on one present!”

“Yes,” he nods. “But they weren’t that expensive and you deserve everything and more.”

Doubt creeps up the back of your neck. Your links had been products you hadn’t been willing to splurge on. Maybe for a pro-athlete they didn’t register as expensive, but- You stop, halfway through unpacking the first one. 

“Hinata showed it to me,” Tobio explains proudly. “He said it’s called a dupe. You get the same thing for less than half the price.”

“Only it’s not the same thing, is it?” You ask, careful to keep your voice even. “Do you… You like saving, right?”

“Who doesn’t?” Tobio asks, legs crossed as he watches you. “Wait? Did I do it wrong?”

“You like the Mikasa brand, right?” You clear your throat. “They make good balls.”

“The Molten are good, too.”

“Imagine I’d gift you a cheap kids' version from the toy store,” you point out. “I would save a fortune, and a ball is a ball, right?”

His jaw drops. Understanding seems to have hit him like a serve straight to the face. 

Before you can gather yourself, Tobio’s scrambling off the bed, grabbing your presents.

“What are you doing?”

“These are wrong,” he insists. “They… they are for Hinata. I mean, Yachi. I mean, I got your present… in the car.”

“You don’t own a car,” you point out, “Tobio, let’s just-”

“No!” He all but stomps his foot. “I’m a terrible boyfriend.”

“You’d be a terrible boyfriend if you left me alone in bed on our anniversary,” you point out with a laugh. “How about we go have breakfast and do a little shopping tour after?”

His shoulders slump. “But-”

“You know what I’d really love?” You ask, leaning forward. “A kiss from the prettiest setter in the whole wide world. I don’t know if he wants to give me one, though.”

“You’re sneaky,” Tobio relents, dropping the presents. “I still feel bad.”

“Good,” you say, pulling him back into bed. “That means we can work on it.”

In theory, maybe I get the “we’re all just playing with barbies, they’re fictional characters, no interpretation is incorrect because it’s an interpretation” argument. But actually no, not all takes are equally valid. Framing something as an interpretation doesn’t mean it inherently has merit. Some takes are completely incorrect and betray a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material. They just aren’t a reason to harass people or send death threats

I tend to favour fanfiction and fanart that are at least somewhat anchored in the source material, as that's the reason why I liked those characters in the first place. But if I come across fics and art that deviate substantially from canon in ways that I do not enjoy, I just scroll away... all this to say: don't spend your precious time and energy being mad over fiction. Curate your own media/cultural experience by scrolling away, paying attention to tags, blocking, etc. Most importantly, do not take your discomfort, anger, etc out on fanfic writers and fan artists.
