Dear dad,

          I’m not even sure you’re still around or not. Thing is, I could probably find you easily now if I wanted. Blume’s made that pretty easy, y’know? But I’m sitting here writing this and I’m not even sure I want to send it when I’m done. There’s not any reason for it. It’s not like I hate you, or want you to stay out of my life. But it’s not like I want you in it either, not after three decades of living on separate continents. We’d basically be strangers. Doubt you’d even know it was me if you saw me. Or maybe you would — my name’s been plastered everywhere the last few years.

Mom’s okay, last I checked in. Living in Ohio now. I think Chicago just got to be too much, with the gangs and shit. Reminded her too much of Belfast in a way. Nicky’s good too, I think. I’m not sure where she went. Like you, I haven’t tried to find her. She needed a fresh start away from me. She’s strong, stronger than me I think. Wherever she is, I know she’s okay.

I guess I’m just recounting all this because I don’t even know what I want to say to you anymore. I guess I missed you, but maybe not in the way I should have. I wanted you around to guide me, I guess. Help me figure out my place in the gangs, teach me more of the things you taught me back home. I’d think about what you would do in a situation, how you’d handle a confrontation, how you’d approach a problem. I don’t think I realized until recently how fucked up that actually is. I never thought about how proud you’d be if I managed to stick it out through school, or any of the typical milestones you’re supposed to make as a kid. I missed you like someone misses a mentor, not a parent.

You would be proud of me though. I looked after my own. I fought like hell to try and keep them safe, even when it blew up in my fucking face. I avenged a little girl’s death. And maybe if I were a better man, I wouldn’t take pride in any of that. But I am what I am now, and there’s no going back for me. There’s no changing what I’ve done. I don’t think I could do a normal life even if I wanted to, and sometimes that scares me a little. If I slow down and think about it, this sense of dread starts looming over me like a fucking cloud. Guilt, I guess. Despair.

I’m not sure what I’m trying to say. I don’t think I’ll send this after all, but writing it down helps. So I guess if you’re out there somewhere, I hope you managed better than me, but we’re enough alike that I doubt it.
