BIOGRAPHY:
Yina Chen had spent her life trying to be like her parents. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t.
Growing up in a strict, traditional Chinese household was stifling, especially under the watchful eyes of her parents, Wei and Li Chen. Constant control, unable to breathe as they watched every move like a hawk. Every aspect of her existence—from her diet to her education — critiqued. Endless torment for a woman with a people-pleasing personality. It didn’t help that the world sat upon her father’s shoulders, but only by choice of his own: her parents' wealth stemmed from the family business. The only thing they appreciated was her dancing, competitive and one of the best
Her families business: a corporation for technology and communications, based both in China and America. From an early age, there’d been the expectation that Yina, being the oldest child, would take over the company.
All they cared about was a continuation of their legacy. And more often than not, the words of how she had a birthright that had been laid out for her. How could she be so selfish to refuse what was offered? It didn’t help that she was extraordinary with computers, a trait she undoubtedly shared with her younger brother. However, when boredom began to settle in, so strictly monitored that she felt that collar around her neck tightening…she snapped. It started as fun, something to pass the time: seeing what files she could get into at her father's company, getting by undetected, and, of course, moving things around.
One day, while searching, she happened upon something she wasn’t meant to find. Her father’s dirty secret. A wife both here and in China. Yina was sure her mother didn’t know about his other family and was certain that he hadn’t ever expected them to find out.
What was to come would only lead to severe fallout with her parents. Yina approached her father first, to let him know what she’d found, and just as she expected, he denied everything. Thankful that she’d kept backup, she presented her evidence to him. In all honesty, Yina thinks about that day a lot, because she’d never seen her father scared before. Not like that. After an argument about the treatment of this family, he made the promise that he’d tell her mother by the end of the day. But she’d miscalculated just how ruthless that man could be.
By the time she came home that evening, her mother was nowhere to be found, her father delivered the news. The final blow. Yina was to be cast out, title and name stripped. Their family had no time for liars, and “the fact that she’d make up such a lie spoke to her true character.”—It was as if she had died, with no communication, no contact. Even her brother had blocked attempts at contact after a few months. And lastly, but most importantly, they cut off all financial support. Stranded with no money and no family, Yina, for the first time in her life, felt completely lost. Alone.
With just the money she had saved from her work, she moved to Macron Park. It was the hardest time of her life, living in a shabby apartment that had more leaks than she cared to mention. It was what she could afford.
Desperate for income, she initially took up illegal hacking to pay the bills, alongside working in a diner to cover rent. Despite her deep desire to work in tech, a non-compete clause and extended garden leave from her family’s company barred her from the industry for two years. And they repoed her car, as it'd been in the family companies name.
Her mother never contacted her again.
Over the first few years of her exile, Yina built a modest life, working under the pseudonym “Flyonthewall” on digital forums and engaging in cryptojacking to supplement her income. This illicit activity allowed her to upgrade her living situation and regain some sense of purpose. Her mother’s lack of contact and her father’s continued efforts to block her job applications through his connections compounded her struggles.
Seeking to escape her lifestyle, Yina at one point paused her work and searched for new job opportunities, but her father's influence continued to hinder her. Despite these challenges, her digital work has been on the way to a rebuild and more work is begining to come in, even as she faced the ongoing repercussions of her family's betrayal and the isolation from her brother. Still, she works in the diner every chance she gets -- even if her double life might begin leaking into her personal one.
