Ymke, for the name thing

Ymke - the flutter of dragonfly wings, black and white kittens, rustic window shutters and wafting curtains, reading in the early morning light, crystal water in forest brooks, the scent of pine needles and apple blossom, constellations and gold trim on old book pages, frost covered bushes of winter berries, ripped black jeans and soft sweatshirts.

A Late Recap and a New Story

It took a category 4 hurricane to get me to be able to escape and have free time. Currently I am in Durham, North Carolina with 5 of my friends. 3 days ago we didn’t even think we would be affected by this storm. Even where we are there is a lot of wind and flooding, but no where near as bad as our beloved little art city, Savannah. 

I finally get to write about the ending of my summer, which was a lovely one. I got to spend another week and a half back home after a beautiful ending in Zarautz, Spain. I spent a long weekend in the countryside of Belgium with my aunt, uncle, cousin and several dachshunds. 

Spent more time at home with my grandma and grandpa and roamed around my home town, managed to catch the last of the “zomerparkfeesten” the biggest music festival in my town during the summer, and even got to see my best friends from Dubai that I hadn’t seen in 7 years in Utrecht. It’s crazy how much fun you can have with girls you grew up with, lost contact with for a while, yet it seemed like we saw each other the day before. 

Once back home I had two days to scramble my things together and prepare for my last year of college in SCAD. Now 4 weeks have gone by plus a hurricane. This quarter is a pretty relaxing one, having two lecture classes (meaning I’m not creating work) and one studio, where I get to explore new ways of printing with chemicals and other fun things. 

Heres a simple cyanotype with some other processes I created in class of a print taken from over the summer in the Netherlands; 

So now we are escaping hurricane matthew. 6 friends and a dingo (dog coyote mix or something like that). Anyways its a lot of laughing, drinking beer, and also doing work. Though in the midst of that we found a long trail, so two days ago we took a 3 hour long hike. Which looked something like this;

We ended up at this gorgeous lake, it really felt like a fall day, if it hadn’t been for the warm weather and most of the leaves that were still green.

Now we’re all sitting at our friends’ aunts house, taking up her upstairs floor, eating chips and trying to get some work done.

#1 Curled Up

Today seems like the perfect day to start a blog; (or try again for approximately the 5th time) its raining outside, my roommate, Zoye’s cat is laying curled up in my bed taking over my soft blanket, my other roommate, Lydia’s dog is on the other side of me curled up, the windows are foggy and its just one of those story days.

Starting a blog is just an outlet. I’m hoping this blog turns into an open book of my life. Where from here on out, I start focusing on me and my goals, and use this to push myself to keep documenting. I need a new outlet where I can also write stories on, share my experiences, and post photos of what I am up to. I am open to any responses, but also none! Now lets see what I will be sharing with you next!

Chris Burkard

When I think of Chris Burkard I start to shiver. Not only because of how much I love his work, but because his photographs are taken in some of the coldest environments on earth. Chris Burkard is the epitome of adventure. Tents, campfires, cool four wheel drive cars, the whole nine yards. Photo after photo he manages to show the what this world has to offer.  He is self taught, from the central coast of California, and living the life.

Morgan Maassen

Morgan Maassen has a distinct style of surf photography. He edits his photos with a high contrast and often leaves the surfer as a silhouette, leaving a hint of mystery and allowing me to place myself in that wave. Morgan Maassen is a very young self taught photographer from Santa Barbara, California and is now working for brands such as Billabong (my dream), Red Bull, Urban Outfitters, Hurley, Surfer, and the list goes on.
