Mission trip 2012!!
I just got back on Saturday from a weeklong mission trip through Young Neighbors in Action to St. Louis, Missouri! For anyone who's done YNIA you probably know it's totally awesome. Basically, it's a combination of service and prayer to really form your faith in all aspects. I worked at Cardinal Ritter Senior Service Center, weeding and mulching and gardening around the campus. It was not what I expected to be doing (I thought I'd be playing cards with old people or something), but it was actually really rewarding.
Since the whole Vega thing went down, I've been looking for ways besides work to fill up my time, and my youth group decided that it would be cool to participate in more service. I plan to dive right in and use my senior status to lead the group. As it says in James, faith without works is dead, and no matter how strong my faith is, if I don't serve like Jesus called me to, I have no shot at heaven. My faith has been deepened, my muscles have been worked, and I'm feeling wonderful after the trip! :)
YNIA San Francisco
First off, Young Neighbors In Action.
So all of last week, I went without: TV and computers, my own shower and bed, seeing my family, friends, and boyfriend. I took out a whole week of my summer to go up to San Francisco to help re-paint hallways and stairways at a poor private school (yeah, I know that kinda sounds weird) and also help organize a few classrooms. Oh and San Fran is about 7 hours from where I live. And we didn't stay in hotels, we stayed at another Catholic school.
To sum it all up, there were 3 other parishes there that went to other sites-I didn't want to be their friends because knowing me, I wouldn't stay in contact with them and befriending them and opening up to them would have been a waste of my time-I learned that the way we look at the needy is a big stereo type.
There are people that walk into soup kitchens in a suit and cell phone while another person would come in dirty and completely homeless. People would look at a person on the streets as a dirty, scary, druggy, homeless person. But really, what if last year that person lost their job, house and family?
I've learned to be more open minded to a needy/homeless persons situation. And now if I see one, I won't be scared to say "good day" or hand them money if they asked. They're people too, just like you and me and I think everyone should be more open minded to their situation and feelings.
