9. what's your writing process like?

I generally start with one idea I want to explore, like an interesting observation that someone has made on Tumblr or something that the show glossed over that I wished they had taken further. I pick a central thesis statement to support, and then I build a story around that.

In each writing session, I go through what I’ve written so far, making some tweaks here and there to reword really awkward phrases and fix blatant mistakes, and then I try to add one or more scenes. I don’t worry about quality too much early on; I just try to get everything written down even if I think it sucks. Then I go back over the story about a thousand times, looking at different things in each pass: continuity, relevance to the central theme, rhythm and cadence, pacing, characterization, etc. The hardest part is remembering that perfect is the enemy of done and forcing myself to hit that post button when I think it's good enough.

15. How do you think your writing as improved over time?

To be honest, I’m not sure how to judge whether it has improved. I think it would be more accurate to say that I’ve gotten more adventurous with employing styles like anthropomorphizing concepts (for example, making emotions like dread or desperation behave like intelligent entities rather than describing what a character feels). I’ve also gotten braver about taking on difficult and more nuanced subjects, mostly thanks to being given writing prompts for things I wouldn’t have considered writing otherwise.

14 - There’s a really horrible joke in Penny for your Thoughts. The story starts out with Dean shooting Sam at the end of 8x06 Southern Comfort. At the end after they reconcile, Sam asks if he can pick the music, Dean replies “hell no”, and Sam thinks to himself “it was worth a shot”. See what I did there? It’s just as well if no one picked up on that.

20 - My favorite thing about writing fanfic is kicking around ideas with other people. The way when one person says something, which inspires someone else to build on it, and so on. Nothing beats talking about your favorite characters with other people who get it.

As for writing in general, it’s creative but it’s also problem solving, like trying to put pieces together by coming at it from different angles. At times I’ve had to completely change my thought patterns in order to make something work, and I love it when something clicks like that.

2 - From a technical standpoint I like Man in the Middle because of the way the imagery and the tension came out. From a story standpoint, I like Thick as a Brick. I’m a minimalist, and I like how everything was resolved with gestures instead of words. I think it’s more consistent with canon in that regard.
