“Ma Gui. Hand me the keys.”
Kunlun didn’t look away from Shen Wei, the hand cupping his cheek sliding down to curl around the back of his neck instead. Shen Wei held his gaze, nostrils flaring. Kunlun inhaled with him, the air thick with Shen Wei’s usually subdued omega scent. The additional alpha pheromones were rubbing his nerves raw, rousing his territorial instincts. He wanted to mark Shen Wei, claim him, make him smell like his where everyone could see, would know.
Taking a deep breath didn’t help, but Kunlun forced himself to breathe through the rising urge, watching Shen Wei’s wide eyes, pupils dilated and hazy with heat, relaxing under Kunlun’s touch.
Then his gaze flicked over Kunlun’s shoulder and he tensed up again. Growling, Kunlun turned his head to warn off the intruder. But it was only Ma Gui, stretching his arm to jingle the keys at him without getting any closer than necessary. Still, Kunlun snatched the keyring, unable to keep himself from baring his teeth.
First he unlocked Shen Wei's strung up wrist, and the moment he was free, Shen Wei collapsed against Kunlun, rubbing his cheek over his chest again and again. Kunlun ducked his head to press a kiss to the crown of his head, reaching for the other wrist. Shen Wei offered it to him freely, holding still as Kunlun took off the broken chain, too. Afterwards, Kunlun just carefully held Shen Wei's hand in his, rubbing his thumb over the red indents on his wrist, where the shackle had bit into vulnerable flesh as Shen Wei struggled. They would surely bruise.
"Kunlun," Shen Wei whispered, his breath hitching.
"I'm here, beautiful. I've got you."
Kunlun dropped the keys, grabbing Shen Wei by the shoulders and pulling back to inspect him. He hissed in sympathy at the scratches littering his chest and hip, his undershirt in tatters, his trousers ripped open at the seams, only a stroke of luck leaving the ties strong enough to hold them up. His battle cloak and armour were missing, and Kunlun made a mental note to hunt them down later. Shen Wei shivered under his hands, swaying towards him, his eyes darting around the tent nervously.
Growling, Kunlun choked on his impotent rage. If he'd been even a moment later, nevermind delayed for another hour or day on his way back, they would've—
Kunlun shrugged out of his cloak, draping it around Shen Wei's shoulders, heavy furs and all. It would have to do for a claim until he could get Shen Wei alone. At the very least, it might help with the shivering.
“Let’s get you out of here,” he said, voice rough. Shen Wei ducked his head, burying into his cloak, a smile stealing over his lips. The sight of it allowed Kunlun to keep a grip on his temper. He wrapped an arm around Shen Wei, pulled him close, then turned to face the leaders of the Alliance. Shen Wei did his best to straighten at his side, to present a strong and united front, although he had to lean on Kunlun a worrying amount, as if his knees were about to buckle under his weight. Ma Gui and Fu You stood by the tent flap, the latter scowling with her hands clasped in front of her.
“And where do you think you’re bringing the prisoner, General Kunlun?”
Sneering, Kunlun tightened his grip on Shen Wei. “If you need to know, Lady Fu, we’ll be heading to my tent.”
Fu You’s expression darkened. “It very much matters, General. You are not yet bonded, and Heipaoshi is still a dangerous enemy and a prisoner of the Alliance. Do not misplace him.”
“Kunlun,” Shen Wei murmured, and Kunlun immediately turned to look at him. Shen Wei swallowed, ducking his head as he glanced back to the torn blankets and pillows covered in blood and dirt surrounding the place he was chained up. A pitiful excuse for a nest. He swallowed. “We can… if we have to… if it appeases Lady Fu...”
“No,” Kunlun interrupted him. He could feel Shen Wei tremble at the suggestion, his own vision filling with a haze of red. The reminder of what was supposed to happen here had them both on edge. He raised his voice. "I will have you as is proper, in a nest of my own making."
"He is still a prisoner, General," Fu You reminded him, and Kunlun whirled on her, his blood boiling, reaching for his saber.
"Ah!" Ma Gui stepped between them, holding up his hands to show himself unarmed. It was the only thing that kept Kunlun from running him through with his sword to get at Fu You. That, and the genuine respect he had for Haixing's strategist. "Perhaps a guard could be arranged around General Kunlun's tent? To ensure everyone's safety."
"No alphas," Kunlun stipulated immediately, loosening his grip on his sword at the peace offer. "Any alpha that enters my tent during my mate's heat will lose their head."
Fear spiked in Shen Wei's scent at the mere mention, and Kunlun turned to him, nuzzling his cheek. Putting his lips to Shen Wei's ear, he whispered, "I'm here, baobei. Nothing will happen to you on my watch."
Shen Wei ducked his head in the tiniest nod, his gaze straying to Ma Gui and Fu You, watching them warily.
"As is your right as his alpha, once you're bonded," Ma Gui hastily agreed before Fu You could get a word in edgewise. Her jaw snapped shut, audibly grinding her teeth. Ma Gui turned to her, suggesting tentatively, "Perhaps this is for the best. The air in here is already… tainted."
"Very well. I will call for an escort," Fu You surrendered grudgingly, her eyes narrowed.
"No need," Kunlun refuted, catching Shen Wei's trembling hand and squeezing reassuringly. Adding more hostile presences to the mix seemed like a terrible idea, and Shen Wei had already endured enough.
"General, you have already gotten many concessions, do not push for more," Fu You hissed, sounding closer to her animal form than human. "The safety of our people is paramount."
"Then I will carry him there," Kunlun brushed her off impatiently, reluctantly turning away from Shen Wei to face her head on. "Will that be enough to assuage your fears, Lady Fu?"
Her jaw tightened, a nerve jumping in her jaw. "He is your responsibility from here on, General. Pray he won't slaughter us all in our sleep."
Kunlun scoffed. "That would've been a worry regardless which alpha took him, wouldn't it?"
Without waiting for a response, he turned to Shen Wei, crouching down and curling his hands under his thighs. Sensing Kunlun's intent, Shen Wei wrapped his legs around his waist, his arms around broad shoulders. He buried his nose in the crook of Kunlun's neck as Kunlun stalked off, knowing without needing to ask that Shen Wei was watching his back, was keeping an eye on the Alliance leaders until they were out of view.
Shen Wei always had his back, even when they clashed on the battlefield.

After their last encounter, Shen Wei had worried about facing Kunlun in battle again. Surely he would have told his men about Shen Wei's omega status, if not the Alliance leadership. Despite the promise, Shen Wei expected to be surrounded, isolated from his own warriors, possibly publicly humiliated and claimed right there on the battlefield. He kept a tight grip on his pheromones, making sure he smelled as neutral as a beta.
Still, he was more on edge than usual, his reflexes heightened by his hypervigilance. It made him very effective as long as it wasn't his allies he saw moving from the corner of his eyes. His warriors adapted quickly to his twitchiness, giving him a wide berth.
It wasn’t until he crossed swords with Kunlun that his nerves settled.
About this nothing had changed: Kunlun matched him as always, cheerful grin and quips to Shen Wei's tongue-tied silence. They clashed in the middle of Haixing's forces, where Shen Wei had pushed forward, leading the charge. A mistake, Shen Wei soon realized, as he was harried with attacks from all sides, spears jabbing at his open back and swords swiping at him from the flanks. Kunlun’s brow furrowed, his movements becoming wider, more erratic, leaving less openings for his comrades to take advantage of. Leaving himself open for attack, and Shen Wei found himself… hesitating.
His enemies didn’t, however.
He barely dodged the jab of a glaive before he had to whirl around and duck under a sword slash, only to find himself in the way of another saber. He raised his own to block the attack, and then Kunlun was at his back. Shen Wei kicked away his attacker and turned to face the general, his eyes flickering to the blade sliding down Kunlun's armour where it had been heading for Shen Wei’s exposed back.
His heart thudded in his chest, a lump forming in his throat as he met Kunlun’s eyes.
Kunlun quirked a smile at him, before letting out a battle cry and heaving his sword up in an exaggerated slash, allowing Shen Wei just enough time to recover. He met Kunlun’s blade, letting himself be pushed back further behind Haixing’s lines. The soldiers made way for their general as they whirled around one another in a dance of blades, up the cliff and right to the ledge.
Shen Wei met Kunlun’s eyes and knew exactly what he was planning. He gathered his dark energy for a portal — to preserve Kunlun’s reputation, he had to make this look good — and let himself be pushed closer to the edge.
Movement caught his attention from the corner of his eyes. A soldier, young and clearly inexperienced, saw an opportunity to claim glory and rushed forward, sword held wide at his side. Kunlun, noticing his distraction, turned to look, opening his guard to the blade. A strangled noise escaped Shen Wei, and he lurched forward, reaching for Kunlun. He caught him just as the tip of the blade sliced into Kunlun’s side as the young fighter tried to run past him at Shen Wei, snagging on the waist cushion and slipping up under the chest armour.
Kunlun grunted in surprise and then Shen Wei was at his side, twisting them around. The sword caught the underside of his arm, slicing through one strap of his wrist guard, and then Shen Wei was dragged down, Kunlun’s hand snatching his robe and pulling him to the ground. They rolled together over the edge of the cliff, and Shen Wei’s eyes widened. Panicked, he grasped as much dark energy as he could and opened up a portal, just before they could hit the sharp rocks jutting up from the ground.
Instead, they landed on soft grass.
They continued to roll until they hit the root of a huge tree, Kunlun grunting as his side was jostled. Shen Wei, having landed on top of him, immediately scrambled up to take his weight off of Kunlun.
“You’re hurt,” he said, voice tight with panic and heart thudding heavy against his ribs.
“It’s fine,” Kunlun mumbled, eyes squeezed shut. He raised a hand to his head, wincing as he touched the back.
“You’re bleeding,” Shen Wei refuted, dark energy springing to his palm with barely a thought. Kunlun squinted his eyes open to watch him as he laid his hand over the cut on his side, but didn’t flinch as Shen Wei poured his energy into him. Brow furrowing in concentration, Shen Wei closed his eyes.
It was worse than he thought. There was the gash on Kunlun's side, of course, relatively shallow but bleeding steadily. Then there was bruising all over his torso where his armour took the brunt of the hits. Shen Wei felt guilt twist inside his chest as he soothed the aches away. But the worst was his head: internal bleeding and gathering of fluids that would’ve likely gone unnoticed and was entirely Shen Wei’s fault; Kunlun must have hit his head falling out of Shen Wei’s portal. That, too, he fixed, though it took a lot of fine control and concentration to ensure everything healed perfectly. Then he spread out his feelers, looking for anything out of place, soothing minor aches and urging long since scarred tissue to soften and heal.
Fingers wrapped around his wrist, tightening and pulling him away. Shen Wei struggled for a moment before blinking his eyes open, letting go of his dark energy. Kunlun was watching him with a soft expression.
“I’m fine, beautiful.”
“Oh.” Shen Wei blinked, his vision starting to swim. “Good,” he added in quiet relief. Black encroached on the edges of his eyes, and he blinked, trying to get rid of the spots. “That’s—”
Why was Kunlun's face turning into an indistinct blur? He hadn't heard of such a power before.
“Xiao-Hei!”
Kunlun’s alarmed cry was the last thing he heard before darkness enveloped him.
...
The first thing he noticed upon waking was the crackling noise of a campfire. The battle-ready tension ebbed with the sound, Shen Wei’s tired mind associating it with the relative safety of their home base. When camping in preparation for battle, they avoided lighting fires so as not to give their position away. Dixingren’s night vision was superior to Haixingren’s, and they could survive in colder temperatures longer than their enemies. A campfire was a luxury rarely indulged in.
The second thing was the heavy fur wrapped around his shoulders. Shen Wei hummed contentedly, rubbing his cheek against its soft texture. He felt warm and safe, enveloped in a smell that promised protection, that appealed to his baser instincts. With it wafted the aroma of roasting meat, making his mouth salivate even more than the alpha scent—
Shen Wei blinked his eyes open, bolting upright. The fur slipped from his shoulders, and he glanced down to recognize it as Kunlun’s cloak. Alarm shot through him, mixed with something else, a feeling he couldn't quite put to words. The idea of being covered by Kunlun, carrying Kunlun's scent...
A chuckle drew his gaze across the fire, where Kunlun was sitting on a flat rock, turning the spit he’d pitted over the fire. He was watching Shen Wei with hooded eyes, an unreadable expression on his face.
“I see you’re awake.”
"I… am," Shen Wei agreed slowly, cautiously glancing around. They were in some sort of clearing surrounded by trees. The area seemed vaguely familiar in a niggling sense. The sky was growing darker, getting close to dusk, at least an hour or two must have passed with Shen Wei unconscious. And yet all Kunlun did in that time was… start a fire, hunt for dinner and make sure Shen Wei was comfortable. Heat rose to his cheek, and he averted his gaze from Kunlun's watchful eyes.
Next, Shen Wei turned his attention inwards. His dark energy reserves were dangerously low, the reason he had fainted: he'd exhausted himself healing Kunlun's wounds. Staring at his hands, he noticed his left wrist-guard was missing. In its place, a strip of blue cloth was wrapped around his arm.
Shen Wei studied the make-shift bandage, the cloth the same colour as Kunlun’s robe. Blood had seeped through it and since dried, making the cloth stick to his skin. Shen Wei let it be for now, unable to do anything about it until his dark energy recovered further.
A new thought flashed through his mind. His hands darted up, touching his face. To his surprise, his mask was still in its usual place. He glanced at Kunlun, who was watching him with a crooked smile, but didn’t comment.
"...where are we?"
Kunlun chuckled, shifting in his seat. Shen Wei pulled his legs under himself, tugging Kunlun's cloak around his shoulder. It was almost too warm, the heavy fur layered over his own cloak, but it was… comforting.
"What, don't recognize it? I'm hurt," Kunlun teased, waving the stick he'd been poking the fire with around. "Aiya, have you already forgotten our first kiss?"
At that, Shen Wei's brain ground to a halt.
Then his face burst into flames, and he ducked his head, trying to hide his blush. It only brought the smell of Kunlun lingering on his cloak closer to his nose, and memories of that kiss drifted to the forefront of his mind.
Now that Kunlun had pointed it out, Shen Wei realized where the niggling sense of familiarity came from. It was the same clearing Shen Wei and Kunlun stumbled upon during the last battle for the Hallows; the fight that ended with him in Kunlun's lap, and Kunlun finding out one of his most well-guarded secrets. The same woods where Kunlun promised to keep said secret, a promise they'd sealed with a kiss.
A promise that Kunlun had kept, despite everything he stood to gain from that leverage.
"And here I thought you picked this place on purpose, as a romantic getaway," Kunlun lamented, pretending to swoon dramatically.
"I didn't have time to choose a destination," Shen Wei replied, trying to keep his voice even. A glance and arched eyebrow from Kunlun made his face burn anew, as he realized what he'd inadvertently given away.
How the kiss, and where it had taken place, had been at the forefront of his mind, to the point he'd subconsciously opened the portal here. How his traitorous mind labeled this clearing as 'safe'.
Shen Wei swallowed. "Apologies. I will return you once I've recovered enough energy to do so."
Kunlun huffed, a soft sound of exasperation, turning his head away. He wagged a finger at Shen Wei, and when he faced him again he was biting his lip as if he caught the words wanting to tumble out before they could.
"Ah, xiao-Hei, you're something else."
Shen Wei reared back, startled. "Wh… what did you call me?"
"Xiao-Hei," Kunlun repeated, cocking an eyebrow. "After everything we've been through, surely we're past formalities, wouldn't you agree?" Smirking, Kunlun tilted his head. "Unless you wanted to call me 'heavenly lord, blessed by many, beloved of all', of course."
Shen Wei felt the blush spread over his face and down his chest, skin burning in embarrassment. He wasn't sure what Kunlun was implying, but his tone, the choice of phrasing made him believe it was a Haixingren idiom, based on some sort of poem. A rather dirty one, too, judging by Kunlun's leer.
For the sake of whatever remained of his dignity, Shen Wei chose to change the topic. "It'll be dark soon."
Kunlun lounged back, glancing up at the sky and making an agreeable noise. "You've been out for a couple hours."
Shen Wei hesitated. The omega part of him felt flattered that Kunlun had gone to all this trouble to make their campsite comfortable, to hunt them a decent dinner. However, in his rational mind he was aware it had nothing to do with courtship, just a soldier's practicality. Still, it took him a moment to overcome his own reluctance to suggest, "We should extinguish the fire before night falls."
"Ah?" Kunlun cocked his head, watching him with an intent expression. "Are we not generals in charge of our own armies? What are you worried about being discovered?"
Shen Wei swallowed and ducked his head. He had no trouble imagining Kunlun standing up to the Alliance to protect him, despite being nominally enemies. Not after what had just happened on the battlefield. However, returning the favour was a different matter: despite Kunlun's assertion, Shen Wei's own standing in the rebel army was much more shaky than he insinuated. Certainly, the rank and file listened to his orders, but the chieftain—
Seeming to read something into Shen Wei's silence, Kunlun's face turned serious.
"I owe you my life," he said quietly, and Shen Wei startled, head snapping up and mouth opening to protest. Kunlun's smile stopped him, soft and breathtaking. "Besides, you worry too much. The Alliance withdrew patrols from this area weeks ago. And your Rebels ceased activity around here shortly after you realized rumours of the Hallows turned out to be false."
Shen Wei snapped his mouth shut, staring at Kunlun with wide eyes. He wasn't sure what shocked him more: that Kunlun shared his intelligence so freely, or his claim of a life debt when it couldn't be further from the truth. Kunlun had kept his secret, had let him go, had protected him against his own allies, had taken care of him when he fainted. How easy would it have been for Kunlun to take advantage of those situations, to either kill or capture Heipaoshi?
Slowly, Shen Wei pressed his fingers to his mask. Even in this, Kunlun had shown him nothing but respect.
"I'm not worth it," he murmured. "What little I have done, I cannot ask for a boon without being too greedy."
"Xiao-Hei, ah, xiao-Hei." Kunlun clucked his tongue. "You are much more selfless than I am."
Licking his lips, Shen Wei glanced up. Not quite believing his own daring, he blurted out, "Then how would my benefactor like to be repaid for his kindness?"
Kunlun's gaze grew dark and heavy, dropping down to Shen Wei's mouth, then slowly roaming down his body. Shen Wei could feel the heat of those eyes setting him ablaze, or perhaps that was simply the heat radiating from the campfire. Despite his many layers and Kunlun's heavy fur coat on top, Shen Wei shivered. He wondered, what if Kunlun asked for another kiss? Or more? What was he willing to give?
"Ah, easy enough," Kunlun announced, his tone light and playful, but his voice hoarse with something darker, closer to a growl. Shen Wei shuddered, swaying forwards instinctively. Kunlun grinned. "Smile for me, beautiful."
“I… what…?” Shen Wei blinked, surprised. As if compelled, the corners of his mouth quirked up, and Kunlun’s grin brightened, eliciting a bigger smile to grow on Shen Wei’s face. They stared at each other, and Shen Wei’s heart beat rapidly against his ribs, trying to escape his chest. He couldn’t take his eyes off Kunlun, the way the fire reflected off his eyes, orange light softening the lines of his face.
“See?” Kunlun murmured, his eyes crinkling. “Now we’re even.”
Shen Wei stared at him, then huffed in amusement, shaking his head as he dropped his gaze. Kunlun was being ridiculous. As if such a small gesture could repay everything he’d done for him, despite being on opposite sides of the war. Still, it was what Kunlun requested, and Shen Wei was more than willing to grant it.
He raised his hand to his mask, tracing over the lines of gold marking it. He wanted to properly repay Kunlun, but… this seemed like a good first step. Shen Wei pulled down his mask slowly, then glanced up at Kunlun and smiled.
“Now we’re even,” he corrected.
Kunlun stared at him, mouth gaping open, stick half-raised in an interrupted gesture. Then his jaw clicked shut, his throat bobbing as he swallowed, before a smirk crawled over his face.
"Ah, good thinking, xiao-Hei!" he praised, leaning in and wagging his stick. "No one who sees your youthful face will believe you're the scary Heipaoshi, scourge of Haixing!"
"That's…" not why, he wanted to say, but the mirth glittering in Kunlun's eyes told him he was well aware. Shen Wei felt his ears burning as he gaped at Kunlun. He dropped his gaze to the fire and cleared his throat. "The rabbit looks about ready," he observed aloud, scrambling for any topic at all.
Kunlun hummed, reaching out and taking the spit off. Then he scooted over, patting the rock beside him.
"Come, sit with me."
Flustered, Shen Wei walked around the fire to sit down next to Kunlun. In romantic tales the alpha would present an offering of food, to prove he could provide. He glanced at the rabbit, wondering if Kunlun intended to feed him, before scolding himself. This wasn't a courtship, and Kunlun wasn't his suitor going through the thirteen steps of wooing an omega mate.
Kunlun waved the haunch he was holding under Shen Wei’s nose, and Shen Wei’s chest felt fit to burst with yearning. Maybe it was the hunger gnawing at his stomach, maybe it was the fact that he hadn’t felt this safe since his parents died. Deep down, Shen Wei could admit—if only to himself—that he wanted this to be a courtship in truth. Before he could second guess himself, Shen Wei leaned down and took a bite out of the rabbit.
Next to him, Kunlun stilled.
Blushing furiously, Shen Wei kept his eyes lowered, leaning back and chewing slowly. While there were different courtship rituals depending on the region, this one seemed universal, judging by Kunlun's reaction. A declaration of intent, at the least. Except, of course, Kunlun was at best offering a courtesy out of respect for a fellow warrior, and Shen Wei had to go and make things awkward, putting meaning where Kunlun hadn't intended any. Shen Wei was a fool.
Glancing up from under his lashes, he caught Kunlun's dark and thoughtful gaze.
"Eat up," Kunlun finally broke the silence between them, holding out the haunch again. "You need to regain your energy."
Chastised, Shen Wei nodded. Yes, that made more sense, of course. Kunlun was depending on Shen Wei to return him to his army. Taking the offered haunch, their fingers brushed, and Shen Wei's face burned in embarrassment. He shouldn't have read more into the situation than there was on the surface. Hopefully, Kunlun wouldn't mention this incident again.
They ate in silence, Shen Wei painfully aware of every time their legs, their shoulders brushed. Kunlun made sure to always offer him a new strip of meat the moment he finished, carving the best bits out of the rabbit with his dagger for him. Shen Wei accepted them quietly, telling his foolish heart to stop skipping every time. After they finished off the meal together, Kunlun offered him his waterskin, and Shen Wei's cheeks burned with the knowledge that his lips were pressed to the same spot Kunlun's mouth had been.
He turned the water over to Kunlun, who took a drink immediately, holding Shen Wei's gaze as his tongue traced the neck of the opening as if chasing the taste of Shen Wei's mouth. Shen Wei felt captivated, his lips parting on a quiet exhalation, and Kunlun smirked back. Then he handed the waterskin to Shen Wei, who clutched it to his stomach.
"You should rest some more," Kunlun finally suggested, breaking the silence. "You're looking far too tired for comfort."
Shen Wei ducked his head, checking on his energy levels. They were recovering slowly, a small pool available to him. He bit his lip and glanced up at Kunlun.
"I have enough to return you home," he offered quietly. It would be tight and leave him wrung dry once more, but he couldn't continue burdening Kunlun with looking after him. Shen Wei straightened his spine and met Kunlun's watchful gaze. "We cannot say who won ground in today's battle, but I can drop you close to your army's camp."
Something sharp flashed in Kunlun's eyes, and he tilted his head.
Shen Wei wondered if he shouldn't have revealed his knowledge of where said camp was, the reminder that they were on opposite sides twisting heavily in his gut. A part of him had forgotten, feeling too safe, too comfortable with Kunlun fussing over him. He tugged on the fur draped over his shoulders, lowering his lashes to hide his expression. For the first time since he took his mask off, Shen Wei felt naked without it.
"And can you get yourself home afterwards?" Kunlun inquired solemnly, and Shen Wei's gaze snapped up. Kunlun eyed him contemplatively, before a crooked smile crept over his face. "We can rest a little longer, xiao-Hei. There's no rush."
"But—" Shen Wei started to protest, but Kunlun's finger on his lips stopped him short.
"It's no hardship to endure some peace and quiet for once," he said gently, pulling his finger back and curling it under Shen Wei's chin, keeping his head up, holding his gaze. There was something soft to Kunlun's expression that made Shen Wei's stomach turn somersaults. "Especially in such gorgeous company."
Heat flushed over Shen Wei's cheeks, but he was unable to duck his head, held still by Kunlun as he was. Instead he lowered his eyelashes to shield his gaze, his heart beating a wild tattoo in his chest.
"I don't want to keep you from your duties," he murmured shyly.
“Aiya, what duties? Listening to the same old arguments as the council rehashes everything only to come to the same conclusion once more?” Kunlun’s mouth twisted into a pout. “Nah. I’d rather stay here, if that’s alright with you.” A pause, and Kunlun’s expression grew contemplative, his tone hesitant. “Unless you have somewhere else to be urgently?”
Shen Wei barely managed to suppress the flinch. He did his best not to think of didi, clinging to the knowledge that no one would dare hurt his brother while he was away, afraid of his wrath. But Zei Qiu wouldn’t be pleased at his little sidetrip, with no results to show. He scrambled for a non-committal answer, but something in his face must have given him away because Kunlun’s brows furrowed, mouth pulling into a frown.
“You can leave first, you know,” the alpha offered with a deep, reassuring rumble in his chest. Shen Wei swallowed, feeling soothed despite his sudden alarm at the thought of leaving Kunlun to fend for himself. Not that Kunlun couldn’t manage— but—
“It’s alright,” he blurted out, dropping his gaze to the mostly empty waterskin, turning it over and over in his hands. “It’s not— not urgent. I just want to check…” —on didi— “on my men, is all.”
"Ah." Now it was Kunlun who floundered. "Of course. You must be… worried."
"It's war," Shen Wei murmured, averting his eyes. His ribs squeezed tightly around his heart.
Kunlun sighed as if in agreement.
"Regardless, we cannot change our current circumstances until you've recovered." Kunlun wagged a finger at Shen Wei, who flushed. "And I refuse to accept a ride if it leaves you vulnerable in enemy territory afterwards."
Shen Wei swallowed past the lump in his throat. "I— it might take a few more hours, still," he cautioned, but Kunlun's warm expression didn't change. "It would probably go faster if I sleep…?"
"Well then!" Kunlun clapped his hands and slipped off the rock, settling on the ground in front of the fire. He patted the grass next to him invitingly. "Come, lay down."
Shen Wei set the waterskin down on the rock before settling next to Kunlun slowly, warily.
"Kunlun-jun, ah…" Shen Wei licked his lips, gaze following Kunlun's hands as he adjusted his robe over his lap. Surely he didn't mean for Shen Wei to pillow his head on his leg? "Are you… quite certain?"
Kunlun reached out for his hand, pulling it up to his mouth, lips brushing against the knuckles as he spoke.
"Don't worry, I'll keep watch."
Shen Wei swallowed, slowly lowering his head into Kunlun's lap, waiting for a sign he'd misinterpreted the gesture, but Kunlun just smiled down at him fondly. His thigh burned hotly under Shen Wei's cheek, his warmth seeping into Shen Wei. Closing his eyes, Shen Wei tucked the kissed hand close to his chest, breathing in the musky spruce scent signalling safety. Fingertips ghosted over his hair, the soothing motion lulling him into a light doze and beyond.
