When you're watching foreign shows with German subs
and can immediately tell they were (mis-)translated from the Eng Subs
"Wie auch immer..." says the narrator during a highly tense scene that is truly tragic drama
Because the English subs clearly used "However..." with the dramatic pause
And "how" = "wie" and "ever" = "immer"
And sure, the dictionary suggest "wie auch immer" as a translation for "however"
And yet.
And yet.
It completely changes the tone from dramatic to ridiculous!
Because "wie auch immer" is much closer to "anyhow", a way to end the current topic and move on. It lightens the mood.
"However" instead heightens the tension, implies stakes, implies conflict.
"Wie auch immer" ends the conflict, case closed, we're done here.
And it keeps kicking me out of the suspense 😭
