Despite her best efforts, the fancy heels Cass was wearing clacked loudly against the marble as she ran through the halls of the Midnight Sun’s latest outpost on yet another undercover job. At this point, she was tempted to toss them aside and make the rest of the way out barefoot. The only reason she was still wearing them was to maintain at least a bit of her cover.
“Come on, come on, where are they?”
She paused, spotting a figure standing still in the dead center of the hallway, staring at the wall. Oh, please let that not be who she thinks that is.
“Excuse me?” she said, slipping into the British accent she was using as part of her disguise, just in case.
The figure turned his head and— oh god, it was.
“Cass?”
“Max-Ernest, what are you doing here.”
Max-Ernest at least had the decency to look sheepish. “Sorry, I was looking at the mural. I can’t tell whether it’s an authentic fresco or just a recreation, you know people say fresco to refer to any mural but it’s actually a specific technique—”
“I don’t care about the mural, Max-Ernest! Did you find the—”
“Yes, I found the dice. I gave them to Yoji already. I just got distracted.”
“Oh my god. Where is he anyway?”
Yoji chose that exact moment to burst in, three security guards hot on his heels.
“Well,” Max-Ernest said. “Speak of the devil.”
Cass told him, in no uncertain terms, to shut up and run. And so they did.
“What the hell did you do?” Cass shouted to Yoji as they ran.
“I didn’t do anything!”
“Well, did you stick to the plan or not?”
“I did! I just ran into some guys right outside and I thought I’d have a chat with them and then they figured out I wasn’t actually a tech billionaire from the Netherlands and they sent these dudes after me.”
Cass groaned. “What part of in and out do you two not understand?”
also from the same interview i do like the little “although not necessarily” because like. yeah most white authors are usually writing their characters as white unless they’re going out of their way to make them poc and rsimon is not an exception. but it’s nice to know that he does support poc interpretations of cass and max-ernest which yeah that’s like the bare minimum but as a poc who hcs them as poc it’s nice to see
