On May 18, 1965, Eli Cohen was publicly hanged in Damascus. Syria forced the local Jewish community to watch. To this day, his body has never been returned.
Born in Egypt, Eli was a proud Zionist who helped smuggle Jews to Israel before making aliyah himself. Recruited by the Mossad, he posed as a Syrian businessman and infiltrated the highest levels of the Syrian regime—so deeply, he was nearly appointed deputy defense minister.
His intelligence was crucial to Israel’s success in the Six-Day War. His legacy lives on in the town of Eliad and in the heart of every Israeli who owes their freedom to his courage.
May his memory be a blessing. May his body come home.
