Simon Hanes and Tredici Bacci (New York) have been a part of my musical "playlist" for over 7 years. I love chamber pop with weird turns. I love grand projects with talented musicians. Simon Hanes has always provided all that.

"Brave New World" seems to keep everything except the spaghetti western feel that used to be a marker of Tredici Bacci music. Sami Stevens' voice is still here, and so is the meticulous orchestration. Really, there isn't much like Tredici Bacci out there.

But if you want to branch out into similar music listen to Inner Ear Brigade, Yonder Pond, and of course Ryan Power (who has been a regular collaborator with Tredici Bacci).

It looks to me like this is being self-released.

8/23/17.

How is Ian Cooke not big?  He makes beautiful thoughtful cello-centric music.  The vocal melodies are perfect and the other instrumentation all seems to be chosen and placed so well.  Yes, this is chamber pop, but it is so good that I put it up there with The Divine Comedy and Busman’s Holiday.

Some of the arrangements and melodies do remind me of a more sedate Bryan Scary.  And don’t forget to check out Yonder Pond (I posted about them in April) who are currently mining a similar sound/feel.

Ian Cooke is a Denver, CO based musician - he appears to be a local staple.  This release (pre-order) and other releases all appear to be self released.

12/26/20.

This blog celebrated its sixth anniversary the other day.  This is our 1,667th post.  We set out to just document what we were listening to on Bandcamp.  And frankly, that is still the purpose.  I love clicking on “Random Post”.  Often, I’ll buy something that after the 2nd go around (Yonder Pond, for example).  I’m getting better at checking my Tumblr mail - so keep sending suggestions, comments or criticisms.

White Shadow lives up to the “shadow” part of their name.  I can’t find out anything about this band.  This cassette is released by Choice Records (New York), but really it’s pretty hard to find out anything about the label either.

White Shadow recall the stoney work of The Memories - heck there is even an ode here called “Too Stoned To Know” (my favorite song regaling stoneage is “Stoned And Starving” by Parquet Courts).  However, I would say that White Shadow make me think of a lo-fi version of a combination of The Flaming Lips and Black Lips.

I was listening to Marker Starling today, and wondered, “Have I posted about this band”?  While I hadn’t, I did reference the band in one post (Holy Hive), and I used the word “marker” in this amazing release from Yonder Pond that was originally posted on April 10th, 2017.

The original post wasn’t given the “Yagada” seal of approval (do a search on the blog and you’ll see what it means).  But it should have.  Some reviews mention, “ “As if the Beatles were working with Moody Blues and Genesis in 1970” “.  And while the original write up was spot on it failed to mention either Bryan Scary, The Able Tasmans or The Flaming Lips.  Here is what was originally said:

Remy Sträuli, from Basel, Switzerland, chose his 40th birthday as the marker to make a record.  He is a drummer, but this album sounds like it was a made by a life-long chamber-pop whiz.
