Yopisode Social Network: Listener-to-Listener Storytelling
The storytelling community is like a tribe. Like any other tribe, communication happens in four dimensions:
When the storyteller talks to the listeners, the goal is to motivate them to act or respond emotionally according to the message in the story. That is the purpose of the story. The storytelling tribe benefits when the number of like-minded listeners increases because the story is shared and the tribe is strengthened.
When the listener talks to the storyteller -- it is feedback. Feedback guides the storyteller to pivot or persevere.
When the listener talks to the listener, then the engine is on and starts to move forward for the first time. This is the force that keeps the tribe together, and it is the force that will bring the benefits of shared experience: patience, hope, perseverance and fortitude during hard times; as well as joy, happiness, celebration, satisfaction and gratitude in good times. It is what keeps the tribal culture validated and refreshes with a new story when the present one has served its purpose.
When the listener talks to outsiders, the tribe of listeners grows bigger and more powerful and the "outsiders" become members of the tribe of "listeners".
In marketing, there is usually only one dimension: the storyteller to listeners. The storytellers spend billions of dollars in advertising trying to build brands each year to make the tribe of listeners listen to their story.
When the connection between listener and listener is created -- the culture is in its most receptive state to hear the story. All the marketing dollars in the world cannot compete with that.

What happens to the listeners after they hear a particular story? How well did they understand the message? What are the different perspectives? What did Jane get that Jack did not get in the story, and can they exchange insights? Who shares those same perspectives with me, and what other aspects of life do we share?
