El último dibujo que vi de Yosaflame aquí fue del año pasado así que...

The reason Kcalb sucks at games like Othello (or chess, as fanfics like to use more) is because he's both extremely stubborn and is very one-track mind. He focuses on the single goal in front of him without considering how his assets are affected in the long term, nor does he try to predict what move his opponent would later make.
It ties nicely with how he preserved in the war and why it escalated to the point of both sides' near annahilation: if his focus is merely to inflict on Etihw the pain they made him feel, the lives and loved ones lost would only serve as fuel to his blazing thirst for vengence. He is unable to see that his blunders indirectly caused their loss in the first place.
It also makes Yosaflame being his right-hand be more meaningful as a narrative foil. Though he may wield absolute authority, Yosaflame's insight may expand his perspectives and shows that while he is stubborn, he is not unreasonable. Indeed, this plays a part to how Yosaflame is indispensable and why lingering fondness toward him carries on to Yosafire.
On the contrary, the reason Kcalb sucks at cards is because Etihw is lady luck and petty as a god can be.
