TV- Meet Me After School

25-year-old Hijiri is in a long-distance relationship with her college boyfriend as she starts her new job as a junior high school teacher. While struggling with her naiveté she is pushed by her third-year student Akira to be committed to staying. She then finds out that he is in love with her. This is controversial, the show makes that very clear. But they also show how these two characters share a meaningful connection thwarted by social norms and none of the main characters know what they want or how to get it. Whether it’s Hijiri’s boyfriend swept up by his new boss, or Akira’s wish to be taken seriously, they all find ways to push past their insecurities and find what makes them happy. Kasumi, Keita, and Yo show their chops as veteran actors. Newbie Kenshi is no letdown, able to portray the intensity and stubbornness of a boy’s first love in such a swoony way (and he’s only 19!). Fantastic drama worth the heartache.
