This is a little art Exchange with me and lovely @anne-is-confused . I am soo soooo sorry for how long it took me to draw these! It kind of spiraled out of control and become an au! of its own. I hope you don't mind me adding an overall synopsis of this fantasy au!. apologies in advance if I made any mistakes, English is not my native language.
Gavin was born in a village next to an enchanted forest. He was orphaned at the young age of 15. Since then he had been taken under the wing of Hank, the chief of the village, as his foster son. He had lost his parents in a raid by a group of Orc Bandits after the village stood up against extortions. Orcs had also taken the lives of Hank’s son and wife. Prior to the attack, villagers had asked for help from the forest elves, their neighboring allies, for help, but had been denied it by the former king, who hadn’t wanted to risk his people’s lives getting involved. Humans emerged victorious with staggering losses, and they never forgot the betrayal.
In the 21 years that passed, the hostility between the two races grew. As they were compelled to share the forest and its resources, the conflict between was inevitable. Small scuffles occurred once in a while, but nothing important enough to gather the attention of the higher-ups, until one day the relative peace was disturbed by two corpses found in the middle of the forest, a man with an elven arrow stuck to his chest and an elf with a long sword buried deep inside his ribcage. Impossible to tell how it went down and who started the fight. Still, it didn’t take long for demands of war to raise from both sides. Then, unexpectedly, a gathering with the chief was requested by the elven king Despite all of Gavin's objections, Hank decided to take the offer and meet the newly crowned king.
The king introduced himself as Elijah. Apparently, the former king had passed away silently in his throne though he was relatively young, no unnatural causes had been found for his death. After the formalities, Elijah made it apparent that he thinks the animosity between humans and elves was undesirable and unfortunate consequences of the former king's selfish decision. He desired to end the approaching war before it started. Hank shared the sentiment, he knew a war between elves and humans meant a further loss of lives and elves had a clear advantage over them by the sheer number of their trained soldiers. Even though Hank’s gut feeling could tell something was wrong with this king in front of him, he knew he didn’t have many choices.
However, there was a problem. Both sides were simply too angry to accept a truce. So the king proposed his plan. A marriage, that would unite the humans and elves. At first, hank thought the king was out of his mind, marriage between a human and an elf was simply an atrocity to elves themselves. But Elijah didn’t seem to be following the rules. He suggested their next in line to take each other's hand in marriage so they could rule together. If Hank were to decline, he had “nothing else to do to stop the war” king stated coldbloodedly. In the end, Hank knew he had to agree. Convincing Gavin, on the other hand, was a war of its own.
Hank and Gavin had a long debate where shouts could be heard from miles away. In the end, Hank left the decision to Gavin. Told him the blood of the children's murdered families would be on his hands if he can't stop being arrogant and selfish then left him to think on that. He felt dirty, knowing the painful memories this would bring back but he had to do it regardless. By the dawn, Gavin informed him in a defeated tone that he had accepted the responsibility and the marriage.
Hank and Elijah arranged a new meeting but this time with their sons accompanying them. That's where they first met. Hate at first sight. He stared at the twin brothers, standing by both sides of the elven king. Almost identical except one had warm and welcoming brown eyes while the other had the cold, steely gaze of a predator. King introduced his sons, the one with blue eyes, Nines. He was slightly taller than his brother Connor. To Gavin's surprise, the older one of the two turned out to be Connor. He felt a momentary disappointment that he dismissed quickly.
The meeting resulted in both sides collective decision to give the heirs most needed time to get accompanied to each other. One year, they decided. After a year the wedding would take place at the sacred waterfall within the forest. Until then the heirs would meet regularly and get to know each other better. Young ones didn’t get to talk throughout the meeting but Gavin could feel the blue eyes boring through him. He could tell he was looking down on him as an a-elf would do, ‘self-righteous bastards’. He didn’t hold himself back from staring back. When the meeting ended they parted until the next day, where they would inevitably meet again for a horse ride in the forest.
That night sleep didn't come to Gavin, because he dreaded the tomorrow. The sun raised anyways. He braced himself to face his ruined future and left the house.
