Somehow, two drinks in, it’s only just occurred to me how odd the absolutely true phrase “when I grew up playing D&D with my family, we were strictly forbidden from role playing our characters” actually is. And yet.

#this is my real life #my family #Dragon Con 2020 #no but seriously #I grew up with my dad as the family DM #played at least once per year for decades and decades #and we were STRICTLY FORBIDDEN from several specific things at the gaming table #including: costumes. accents. ye olde high fantasy speech. anything that might be termed 'role playing'#ON THE OTHER HAND #one time my dad -- as DM -- tried to invoke the feeling of Hall of the Mountain King #by referring to the boss mob as The Goblin King #which IMMEDIATELY launched THE ENTIRE FAMILY into a group rendition of Labyrinth songs #YOU REMIND ME OF THE BABE #WHAT BABE #THE BABE WITH THE POWER #WHAT POWER #guys I am trying to-- THE POWER OF WHODOO #I mean more like-- WHO DO??#YOU DO!!#DO WHAT???#R E M I N D O F T H E B A B E #my poor father #but now he's a professor of game design dealing with college students all day every day #so I feel like we prepared him in the best way possible
