There has been a major issue bothering me about barnyard. The "male" cows have utters. But an epiphany struck me as I was watching it today.

The farm is known for being a refuge for animals up for slaughter or otherwise in danger. In reality, it's a common problem in cow herds that some female cows will act male (trying to get it on with other females, won't mate with males, will even fight males) and so because it disrupts what is ideal for the farmer, that cow goes to market. This farm being a refuge for barn animal, then heifers who act male wouldn't exactly be out of the question for animals you could see needing refuge.

The reason they have utters is because they are female cows who think they are males.
