It is possible to love too much?

Ask the plant that receives too much water or the over weight pet dog or the child who throws a tantrum in the supermarket. Too much of anything spoils its host.

I heard a comedian lament how his step father loved him into mediocrity. After his mother and father broke up, he was able to channel that pain into extreme measures and he discovered that he was really fast. And so he use track as a coping tool, channeling all of his pain into running sprints. But after his stepfather came into his life, his pain dissipated and he lost his edge. His funny bit got me thinking how love is pacifying. The best villains and superheros all emerged from pain and not love - it is the lack of love that creates greatness and even reveals the apex of man's capabilities.
