We're used to blocking things out.

Now we can block people out too. We can block them on our Whatsapp and Facebook. We can block people out of our lives. We can pretend they don't exist. We can unfollow them so that we don't have to be bombarded with their differing opinions.

How does this help us though? I'm pretty sure it doesn't. It allows us to filter out what we don't want to deal with, whom we don't want to interact with, or what we don't want to read.

In reality though, in real social settings, we don't simply get to filter out someone overbearing, someone depressing, someone obnoxious, someone too optimistic.

In reality, we are forced to interact with various people, people we may or may not share values and ideals with.

In reality, there is no unfollow or block button when we find ourselves in the workplace in close proximity with people who may or may not get under our skin.

In reality, we have to have a backbone and not be a pushover, we have to be the right balance between tolerant and kind, we have to understand how to interact with the type of people who may not be 'our cup of tea'.

In reality, the only filter we will benefit from having, is the type of filter that can function, in reality.
