I do something similar with my mum where I ask what's the matter but she thinks thats meant to mock her so I explain "when I ask what's the matter I want to know because I care about you and I can see something is bothering you" and her anger goes on simmer. She leaves to go do something else then talks to me when she's calm

When you do that does she come back with a satisfactory answer of what’s bothering her? Or does she misplace her frustration?
