🍁🍂 this time of the year will always mean a lot to me. when my body told me to slow down and breathe, it taught me that I can't do everything. not all at once, and that there's only so much I can control.
a lot of things are important in life but nothing's more important than your health, and very few things are worth running yourself to the ground.
"If you don't take care of your body, where are you going to live?"
i've grown a lot in this year and i'm so grateful for the amazing support system I surround myself with everyday. and for whoever needs to hear this, you make today better just by being. – 💕💕

This Mad TV sketch was shown to me in my own therapist’s office. It made me laugh as much as it made me think.
We all sometimes just need to be called out on our negative, self-deprecating thinking, don't we?
I've been blessed with people who care about me enough to do this for me: Jason, Justin, Melissa, my mom, my sisters, Sara G., Debra V., and Dr. D. to name some.
You’d think with all these people calling me out, I’d get it and just stop it. I am working on it, but this re-training of the brain thing is proving to be challenging for me.
You know who hasn't done this enough for me?
Yep, that’s right. ME.
This morning in the shower at my sister’s, I was reflecting on what a treat it is to be at her house. Her guest shower is always full of luxurious soaps and shampoos for me to use. When I get out, lovely body lotions await me.
I thought about the big pretty flowered box sitting in my closet. The box given to me as a going away gift from fellow lab techs…4 frickin’ years ago. The box I hauled from MN to CA. The box full of wonderful soaps, lotions, shower gels, and candles. The box I’ve only dipped into in order to pick out a gift for someone else.
What's that all about, anyway?
I sometimes have skewed thinking when it comes to things I find luxurious and soothing….and costly. I tell myself it's because I’m frugal and that would be true. But there’s more truth underneath it.
It’s thoughts of not doing enough, not having enough, not being enough.
You see, in my mind I can freely use my sister’s products because I help her when I visit; help her move, pet sit, or cook a holiday meal. The message I give myself is I need to do something to deserve it.
My daughter-in-law, Melissa, travels for work and often gives me her hotel soaps, lotions, and shampoos. She does this because she knows I love the cute and fragrant little 2 to 3 use bottles. I do enjoy them, but I limit the amount I take at a time and risk body and limb doing slippery acrobatic moves to squeeze out 4 to 5 uses. The message I give myself is I don’t have enough.
When I open the flowered lid to that box in the closet, I take in the pretty colors and smells. Instead of thinking with gratitude of the friends who gave these gifts to me because I meant something to them, I think they’re all just too nice for me. I must pay it forward and give them away. The message I give myself is I am not enough.
Today, I vow to call myself out and say what Bob Newhart would if I was sitting in his office babbling on and on about this way of thinking:
I’m going to remember that each day is a chance to start again on that re-training of the brain thing.
I’m going to open that box of gifts so thoughtfully given to me, and pamper myself with them. When the containers are empty, I will fill myself with gratitude for their gifts of soothing luxury.
And when I feel panicky, worried, and unsure of myself, I'm going to deeply breathe in a gentle reminder: "You do enough, You have enough, You are enough."
Please, will you do the same for yourself?
Julie
