A way to start and end your day
One thing I've started doing, since making my lifestyle change of positivity and healthiness, is stating aloud 10 things I am thankful for each morning and night. Not only is this a healthy way to acknowledge the good things in your life, it will also put a smile on your face and make you realize how truly blessed you are. This exercise is a great and timeless way to start and end the day on a positive note, which will leave you feeling a whole lot better before you sleep and when you wake up!
Positivity and Openness
Yesterday I was at Goodwill looking for more textbooks to collect, which is one of my favorite pass times, and I met this incredible woman named Ruth. It's funny because I was pulling a book out from the shelf, causing it to shake slightly, when she asked "Am I having a stroke or is that shelf moving?" I laughed and told her that she was not having a stroke and that I too saw the shelf moving. A couple minutes passed and we were still in the book aisle next to each other. I'm not really sure why but I just decided to start talking to her. I told her about how I was aspiring to become a nurse and instead of turning away from me or saying "I have to go" she listened to me, and I mean she actually listened to me. We talked for about twenty minutes about lots of things, nursing, breast cancer, and even politics. It was so refreshing to talk to someone I've never met before and see their point of view on these topics and even on life. We also discovered some things that we have in common like collecting books. We even agreed upon who should win the presidential race! From the little time I spent talking to her, Ruth made me feel proud and inspired. She encouraged me to keep building my book library and even told me that she would pray for me and my nursing journey. It's amazing that we were both strangers just standing in the Goodwill book aisle. And to think, I could've missed out on getting to know this beautiful person if I wouldn't have stepped out of my comfort zone and taken a chance to be open to getting to know someone new. So my point is that if you think positive and act positive, great things are bound to happen. They do not have to be extravagant, in fact some of the best and most positive things that happen in life are little moments that silently change our lives.
You know,I am at a point in my life where I'm quite comfortable with my looks. But in a society where lighter is better, how do you think that 12 year old black girl feels when she hears that "black women are disgusting" or "ew,black girls they are ugly" or"I guess a light-skinned one wouldn't be that bad", "I want a red bone" and "Naw man i'd never date a black chick, just give me a white girl or something.". Isn't it funny how we teach our daughters they're beautiful but then we turn around and call someone else's daughter disgusting. And this is not just black people but I've seen examples in East/South /Southeast Asian culture, Europe,South America. And don't even start with the bullshit about "oh well in their culture it's not about being white".I understand that was not the case back then but is that an excuse for the colorism that goes on now? You would think by now stupid stuff like that would be over. We're smarter than that more tolerant. That sort of thing doesn't happen anymore. Haha sike!! It might have become less but it is definitely still here, hidden in magazines, movies, toys and just overall in pop culture. I remember I wondered as a child why there were no dark-skinned Disney princesses and that it was probably a requirement to be at most lighter-skinned to be a princess. I'm happy Tiana is here now and I'm happy that slowly very very very slow ther seems to be progress in the mainstream media. How maybe one day there will be more positiveness. And for once we won't be portrayed as the violent, the loud, the irrational, the stupid and the lazy. It disturbs me how I sometimes feel like I have to prove myself more than others being in a new year in a somewhat new school being put in a class of mostly white children living in parts of our district where their parents have their own piece of grassland and mommy and daddy both work in the political field or in a bank. And everyone assumes I'm going to act like the ridiculous outrageous unmannered loud black cashier at the fried chicken restaurant from that skit on that TV show that everybody seems to love here in my country. Please Lord, let me have patience with them. I understand I'm going to have to work harder to impress people than the majority has.Just like most of my brothers and sisters part of one of the ethnic minorities here. Whether you are Arabic or black even if you're eastern European they will have prejudices. Being a female, being black. I'm going to have to go that extra mile but in the end it will be worth it. I promise you that, present self.*giggles at the thought *
