That Interstellar gif set gave me a headcanon that runs parallel to the Sonny's Home for Boys one. What if the Matthew McConaughey guy was someone who briefly had to care for Alex and take her in, and was way more of a loving father figure than John was even though he only stayed with Alex a short while, but eventually her family found her and he had to let her go. He drove her to the motel where John and the boys were and drove away alone and crying. Crap now my heart hurts :(
