Dear Diary
Journal Entry #2December 1965
My father got me a telescope for my birthday. I put it together, looked through the lens and... Nothing! Well, not nothing. I could see a few twinkling lights, but nothing like pictures I’ve seen before. There’s too much light pollution. I hate living in the city. I miss living in the country with mum and dad.
He found me in my room, very upset. He took my hand and lead me to the car and we just drove for what seemed like hours and hours and hours in the middle of the night. AND he kept up a constant stream of conversation, something he hasn’t done in a long time. Since mum died...
Finally, he parked in a dark empty field. We laid on the ground and watched the stars. They were so bright and vibrant and sparkly... Everything was quiet too, until dad, out of nowhere, said ‘I miss her too’.
I knew he was talking about mum. I miss her too, but more than that I miss him. Mum’s memory is frozen forever and I know I can never have her, but dad is still here. He walks around the house and works, but he’s never been the same. It’s worse because I think he can come back, but he hasn’t and I don’t know if he ever will.

Aurora looked around the city, eyes big and grey, like mild storm clouds. The child was out alone, wandering about in the midday sun. She didn't look lost or afraid, like a child her age should be. Rather, she felt at peace with the world around her.
Her slender frame was covered with tattered fabric, making her look as if she were homeless or neglected. But slung across her small shoulder was a backpack. It seemed to be rather heavy for a child her age as it was filled with books of all kinds.
