One of the best things about working at Usborne is being constantly surrounded by wonderful books, many of which we remember from our own childhoods. Sarah (UK Marketing) has blogged about her favourite childhood Usborne title before and today she is giving us a sneak peek into a new Usborne edition of one of her most-treasured books of all time.

"When I was a child I absolutely adored 'Anne-with-an-e' of Green Gables. I loved her tenacity, her intelligence and her infinite capacity for positivity. I had an old Children's Classics edition of the book that I read until the pages were falling away from the spine. I even annotated it one rainy afternoon, underlining all of my favourite sections and imagining what it would be like to be involved in the process of creating a book like Anne. It was with huge excitement, then, that I noticed an Usborne Reading Programme edition of Anne of Green Gables on our publishing schedule earlier this year.

Beautifully illustrated by Alan Marks and hardbound with a ribbon marker, this edition of one of the best-loved stories of all time makes a perfect gift for a young reader just starting to discover the joy of classic novels.

Written in consultation with reading experts, the story is retold in simple text, making Anne's adventures fully accessible for children who are confident in their reading, but haven't yet built up all the vocabularly and stamina necessary for standard length novels. It's ideal for children aged from about 7 up.

Reading this gorgeous retelling of an old favourite definitely brought back all the magic of Green Gables for me. In the original text of the novel Anne says, "That's the worst of growing up... The things you wanted so much when you were a child don't seem half so wonderful to you when you get them” but the process of publishing enchanting and stimulating stories and getting them into the hands of new readers is just as exciting as my childish self ever imagined it could be."

Anne of Green Gables will be available from 01 January 2014.
