Yesterday, Marissa and Allyson (past Cultivating Community intern) went on the 16th Annual Detroit Tour of Urban Gardens & Farms. There were four bike tours and three bus tours available, and we went on a bus tour called "Fresh Perspectives" that featured youth gardens.
The picture here is from the first stop, at the Genesis Lutheran Church Garden. There was actually a garden at the church for a long time, starting with a group of elders that called themselves "the gardening angels." Starting in 2009, it expanded as a community garden with a youth-centered market garden. "Young Sprouts" take care of the garden and sell the produce at the farm stand on site from 4-7 PM on Wednesdays, and they also sell produce at Eastern Market. Through this program, high school kids can learn business skills before they graduate.
