Young Bess is a historic film based on the life of Elizabeth I, from her childhood to becoming Queen of England. The film is based on the novel Young Bess (1944) by Margaret Irwin. Janet Leigh tested for the lead role and Elizabeth Taylor was also considered. Filming was postponed as it was negotiating with James Mason. The role went to Jean Simmons and her husband Stewart Granger who appeared alongside her. Filming kept being on hold due to Simmons having a contract dispute with Howard Hughes. Charles Laughton signed to play Henry VIII, who he also played in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933).
The film stars Jean Simmons (Elizabeth I), Stewart Granger (Thomas Seymour), Charles Laughton (Henry VIII), and Elaine Stewart (Anne Boleyn).
