If you're a fan of clean and modern decor but aren't sure if the whole minimalist aesthetic can truly feel lived in, this should assuage your doubts. (Yes I just used the word "assuage", pretty sure that was in my SAT test prep study guide 10 years ago.)
YoungHouseLove recently featured a house tour that has the modern-but-comfortable thing down pat.
My husband and I decorated our apartment with a minimalist vibe, but our choices reflect necessity rather than style. But we're moving this summer, and these house pictures have me thinking I need to decorate our new place more purposefully, but still with a "less is more" mantra.
Meanwhile, I'm dying over that graphic rug... and that couch is perfection. What do you think?
Here are some updated photos of the shelf Michelle and I made 2 weekends ago. It had a few more things on it now including one of my favorite pitchers!
I also wanted to do a little shout out to Young, House, Love as their book sits on my new favorite shelf! They are such a great blog with awesome tutorials! Check them out : )
Ever since we moved in eleven months ago, I've had a hard time figuring out what furniture and decor combo would be best to place on the main wall in our family room. The wall has great length (almost 18 feet), and ends nicely at our corner window. But the problem is it's just so...blank. And growing in blankness. The possibilities of what could fill that space are indecision-endless. Like when you're standing in front of six dozen cereal options in the grocery isle. Cheerios, Frosted Shredded Wheat, Life, Honey Bunches of Oats...eh. Nah. Too many options. Too many decisions. (Oh look, they have Oh's!).
I thought I had been making progress on my indecision-endless wall over the summer when I found a relatively inexpensive entertainment center on sale from Target. It served as a pretty good bookshelf (since we lack a TV) and displayed some photos nicely. It was a functional piece and seemed to be a lifer, so for a while I had only been mulling over what decor to hang on the wall above it. That is until a few weeks ago when I realized something: I didn't like it. I didn't like the on-sale-Target-entertainment-center. It looked too short for the wall (that had nothing hanging above it), and it looked a little too bachelor-pad to me. When I mentioned these concerns to Kyle, joy rang in my ears as he said "he understood" and that I "could girl-ify the house and decorate it up" a bit more. Hallelujah! Hence the teal kitchen curtains and my current search on Craigslist for a furniture replacement.
Here was the deal: I could get a new entertainment center/sideboard as long as it cost the same price that we sold the on-sale-Target-entertainment-center for. Perfect. Easy. I could do that. I could sell it for $50 and I could find one for $50—those are both reasonable prices. The kicker: we had to sell the entertainment center first. (Oh!)
Ok, ok, still no biggy. I could do that.
So, I posted our entertainment center on Craigslist and have been stalking Craigslist Seattle-Tacoma for the past ten days with four different searchers: dresser, entertainment center, sideboard, mid-century. All are filtered under For Sale by Owner, a max of $50, and yes, a photo is required. I have those search pages saved on my iPhone and I refresh the page at least ten. times. a. day. Why you ask? Because for the first seven days of my search, I didn't, and look what I missed out on.
To help you connect the dots, here's a photo of the inspirational piece that spurred my searching. A little paint, a little love, and anything mid-century will find a sweet home in our living room.
(from my new favorite blog, YoungHouseLove.)
You may be wondering why I'm searching if I haven't even sold our on-sale-Target-entertainment-center yet. Oh, but I have! We said goodbye to that lovely piece of fake wood on Monday evening when Jason and Amy took it home to be with their eight month old. So now I have $50 in cash staring at me from the indecision-endless wall, along with all our books, photos, office supplies, and games that were stored in the on-sale-Target-entertainment-center.
You'd think this would drive me crazy (and I'm sure it will) but I've yet to reach that point. It's rare, actually, for me to be patient in making a decision. I love doing and can't stand weighing options. And I can't stand clutter. So this whole thing happening in our family room right now is beyond me. I've got my best friend and her husband coming in four weeks, so I'm hoping I land something before then...otherwise I really may go a bit crazy.
