Hi so my mum has sprung on me she has pcos and that it could be hereditary. I currently show no symptoms of pcos (I'm 18) and I have gendercare appointments in the summer. Should I ask a doctor for tests now? Can they even detect it before it's developed? I really don't want any invasive tests done if I do get tested. And lastly (I really don't know much about pcos) will T like, make it worse or more dangerous or anything? Thank you, sorry for all the questions i guess it panicked me a bit
There’s no harm in asking for the relevant tests now, because if your blood tests when going through Gendercare indicate that you may have PCOS (raised testosterone levels pre-T are the most common indicator) then they will very likely ask you to go for an ultrasound to confirm/rule out PCOS before starting testosterone. If you don’t have detectable PCOS now then it’s pretty unlikely that will change in the coming months.
I’m not sure what kind of tests you would consider invasive, but ultrasounds are often used to diagnose PCOS, so if that worries you then it may be worth preparing yourself for that if your GP/Gendercare think it’s necessary.
Testosterone shouldn’t have any impact on PCOS - a lot of people with PCOS go on to start testosterone with no issues whatsoever.
There’s some general information on PCOS on the NHS website.

‘Coronus, The Terminator’ by Flying Lotus
This is arguably one of the best music videos I’ve ever watched. Directed, by Young Replicant, it truly embodies what the album, ‘You’re Dead’ is truly about. Phenomenal.
