Yesss... I crave what you crave...
your needs,
and my needs…
when they ask me what my favorite noah kahan song is but i can’t say your needs, my needs because it reminds me exactly of how i was exactly a year ago and nothing will ever be more freeing than the sensation of scream-singing that song live in concert, surrounded by hundreds of people, all at once feeling alone with the lyrics and while at the same time everyone in the crowd became one and also the “plot” of your needs, my needs heavily reflects the plot of dead poets society (at least in my eyes) with the soft, gentle, sentimental beginning verse/chorus, reflecting todd’s blooming friendship with neil. then, so very suddenly, the bridge (?) starts and neil has suddenly died. todd’s life sounds exactly like both the instrumentation and lyrics at the drop. the endings are also very reminiscent of each other. finally, lyrically, “your needs, my needs” represents todd and neil’s individual needs. from the perspective of todd, “your needs” refers to neil. neil needed to be let go. he needed to die. if he hadn’t, he would have lived an unhappy life and would have never felt truly free. to neil, death was the only solution. the only way he would ever be truly free was in death. to todd, “my needs” refers to todd’s need for neil. neil was the spark in his life, the reason todd lived. he helped todd come out of his shell, he was always there for him, he was his emotional pedestal. todd needs neil, but he has to inevitably accept that no matter how much neil knew that, neil needed to die.
so i just say maine.
Oh well, who was I?
Who was I to watch you wilt?
You ain't gotta tell me what it means
Trace the outlines of your dreams
You'll always be a flower on my skin
And the pain that I am in
It's all the same
The losing touch, the waiting game
You cross that county line
I promise to be there this time, alright?
You were a work of art
That's the hardest part
Howling like dogs in the light of the moon
Holding our breath after 1:32
You asked me why I wasn't sayin' a word
I'm namin' the stars in the sky after you
It was a work of art
That's the hardest part
To spiral out, to try and float
To see a friend, to see a ghost
Bitter-brained, always drunk
Rail-thin, Zoloft
Subtle change, shorter days
Dead-eyed, dead weight
Your life, your dreams
Your mind, your needs
My needs
Your needs, my needs
To spiral out, to try and float
To see a friend, to see a ghost
To see a ghost, to see a ghost
To see a ghost
Philippians 4:19 (NIV) - And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.
