How do adjust for exposure when shooting in manual mode while using a flash? I'm still a newbie and don't have professional equipment so I'm using the built-in flash in my Nikon DSLR. Thanks in advance. Great blog, by the way. Kudos!
Hey Mark! Thanks for the question and for the encouragement! Sorry that I’ve been MIA and haven’t answered this yet. School was pretty rough until December break so I decided to rest a little bit before delving into more tutorials. Gah. Rest is so important, but so hard to do sometimes! Especially when you want to go, go, go! But I’m glad photography is restful. :)
To be completely honest, I haven’t tried manually exposing my images while using a flash before. Like you, I don’t own a professional off-camera flash, so I use my built-in flash. But… I only use it when it’s absolutely necessary. I really prefer natural light shooting and that’s what I know most about. Ah! Your question helped me realize I need to get out of my comfort zone with that.
Soooo I did some experimenting with my flash to answer your question, and this is what I noticed.
I used a Canon 60D and a 50mm f/1.8 lens and shot a subject against a poster in a bedroom (lit with fluorescent lighting) for this test.
I started with an aperture of 2.5, a shutter speed of 1/200, and an ISO of 320. With the flash, I noticed that the image was nice and bright. The background was blurred nicely and my subject was in focus. I started opening up my aperture a couple of stops at a time and saw that the only thing that changed was the depth of field in my photo. Changing my aperture had no impact on the brightness of the camera (which, without a flash, would have made the image noticeably brighter or darker).
Next, I kept my aperture at 6.3, shutter speed at 200, and started boosting my ISO up a little at a time. I tested the following ISOs: 100, 320, 1000, 3200, and 6400. The brightness of my image never increased. However, the color temperature changed from each new ISO. (I totally spaced and didn’t set my white balance. It was left on Shade for this test and the higher my ISO, the warmer the image got. For some reason, the ISOs of 100 and 320 were white balanced really well. Happy accident?)
Last, I checked my shutter speed. I kept the aperture at 6.3, ISO at 320 (again, just for funzies), and tested the following shutter speeds: 1/200, 1/50, 1/40, and 1/13. My image was clearer when my shutter speed was higher. When I shot with a slow shutter (1/13), my image had some ghosting going on (leaving a movement trail)—especially when my subject moved.
With that being the end of my test, this is what I have concluded. You can use your camera on manual while using your flash. However, since you are using that flash to achieve an automatic brightness level, you really can’t dim down your image by using aperture, ISO, or shutter speed. All you can really do is adjust your settings so that your subject doesn’t ghost (or so that they DO ghost if you want that cool effect) or to change your depth of field.
I hope that was helpful. I tried my best to understand and research your question. If anybody out there knows more about using a camera on manual settings with a built-in flash, please feel free to drop me a message so I can post it and help Mark out!
And if anyone wants to know more about using your camera on manual (ISO, aperture, shutter speed and all that jazz), I’m thinking about posting a tutorial about that soon.
