Hi, can you recommend similar quirky movies to God Help the Girl? ^_^
(500) days of summer, across the universe, electrick children, frances ha, submarine, the double (a bit dark, but quirky), anything by wes anderson, charlie bartlett, the perks of being a wallflower, juno, the boat that rocked, nick and norah’s infinite playlist, scott pilgrim vs. the world, what if (i didn’t like this but it’s fairly cute and quirky), little miss sunshine, whip it!
i’ll post this so people can add to the list if they want (:
Once you get this, please list 5 things that make you happy and then put this in the ask of 10 people who reblogged from you last!
the first five things that came to mind are:
my dog
my niece
my friends
travelling
Harry Potter
I just stumbled upon your blog and think it's lovely <3 I was wondering what underrated period dramas would you recommend? And what are some good European (non English) period dramas? :)
Oooh hello! Thank you for the compliment. :)
What a lovely ask. I love talking about obscure things I like!!
So in terms of underrated Anglophone period dramas, I can recommend:
- Barchester Chronicles. It’s a seven part BBC adaptation from the 1970s of a couple of Trollope novels about conflict in the Church of England in the nineteenth century. It sounds dry but it’s AMAZING. It’s hilariously funny and intelligent and deeply moving. Also stars a very young Alan Rickman as a creepy clergyman. MUST SEE.
- Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda. George Eliot BBC adaptations from the 1990s. Both excellent. If you like sprawling Victorian sagas then you’ll enjoy them.
- Little Dorrit. Reasonably well known BBC adaptation of the Dickens novel starring Matthew Macfadyen and Claire Foy. Really gorgeous drama with an adorable, long-drawn out romance and plenty of gothic drama and creepy villains. Good stuff.
- Wives and Daughters. 1999 adaptation of the Elizabeth Gaskell novel. Superior IMO to North and South. A really interesting story and gorgeous romance with great depth of character. Features a young Iain Glen being sinister and Keeley Hawes being charming.
- Indian Summers. 2015 original drama on Channel 4 set in British society in India in the 1930s. Sumptuously produced, interesting plot, and all the characters are ambiguous and varying levels of horrid. Doesn’t shy away from showing the appalling racism and colonial attitudes of the period.
- Lark Rise to Candleford. Five seasons in the 2000s. Gorgeous, whimsical drama set between village and small town life at the turn of the century. The first few seasons were amazing but it went downhill (IMO).
- Fleming. Lush, entertaining tv fictionalised adaptation of Ian Fleming’s life as the inspiration for Bond. Starring Dominic Cooper who would make an amazing Bond himself.
- Restless. Adaptation of a thriller by William Boyd set half in WW2 and half in the 1980s and starring Hayley Atwell and Michelle Dockery.
- The 39 Steps starring Rupert Penry-Jones. There are lots of versions of this story but I absolutely love this one. I can just watch it over and over again.
Other period dramas that I haven’t got along with personally or just haven’t seen but might appeal and aren’t so widely know: Banished, Home Fires, The Crimson Field, Mr Selfridge, The Paradise, Bomb Girls, Anzac Girls,
As for European period dramas, well I am DEFINITELY not an expert and I haven’t seen many.
- Spain seems to be currently winning in the awesome period drama stakes. There’s Gran Hotel which is set upstairs downstairs in a fancy hotel in the Edwardian period with plenty of murder and intrigue. It’s great fun! The same people made Velvet which I think is set in a company in the 1950s??? I’ve watched the first episode of El Ministerio del Tiempo which is a time-travelling fantasy period drama and consequently amazing. I’ve watched the first episode so far and really liked it. I also want to see El Tiempo Entre Costuras, an adaptation of a best-selling novel involving WW2 spying so it sounds good.(Yes, WW2 spies are my thing in case you haven’t noticed!) There’s also Seis Hermanas which is about six sisters whose father dies and they have to get on somehow. IDK that’s all I know! Oooh and there’s a Spanish Tudors type thing called Isabel which looks pretty good.
There’s an Italian period drama out there called La Donna Velata but I haven’t seen it. patsan could probably tell you about that. There’s a Danish period drama called 1864 which has recently been broadcast or is still being broadcast on the BBC. Further afield from Britain, I watched the first episode of epic Turkish series Magnificent Century and really enjoyed it but couldn’t find more than the first episode with subtitles.
shiparker could tell you about Brazilian period dramas, if you’re interested in that, in particular Lado a Lado which sounds amazing.
I know that there must be loads of other European dramas - I’ve no idea what’s going on in France and Germany at all, for instance. But I just don’t know about them, I’m afraid. Hope this gives you a few ideas though!
Is this on set of a particular film? :) /post/119518221665/a-cute-picture-of-tony-perkins-to-brighten-your
yes!! it’s from phaedra :)
Is Sara Vickers part of series 3 of endeavour?
She’s not been confirmed but I’d be surprised if she didn’t at least make an appearance.
Oh, I hope one of the followers know, it's such an adorable photo! Thank you sooo much though!! ^_^
Hopefully someone will message in or reply with an answer, fingers crossed! :)
