It’s been a great July. We learned a lot- not only about the Rock Creek Watershed, but each other and ourselves.

Fun fact: when black rat snakes feel threatened, they may flee or vibrate their tails, mimicking rattlesnakes to intimidate the attacker #RC3 #LoveRockCreek #ConservationCrops #YouthCorps #three #eagles #KnowCapitalCity @capitalcitypcsdc @nationalparkservice

Week 2 has finally come to an end! This week Crew 3 helped construct a trail in the upper portion of the Rock Creek watershed in Derwood, MD. When we first got there, Jim Corcoran, Volunteer Services and Community Partnership Coordinator with Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission greeted us and showed us the tools we were going to be using.
There were only two tools that we used- a McLeod for moving the soil and loppers to cut back roots and encroaching branches. Jim gave us instructions on how to use them and then we headed of to the trail and to start working. The trail was roughly made when we got by machinery- what we did was sculpt the trail into its final form. We made sure there were no holes on the ground, no roots, and a path that is easy to walk on.
The purpose of the trail work was to help the rain water to flow across the trail tread rather that down it, helping to minimize erosion. This helps both trail users and the surrounding areas by minimizing sediment runoff. This was tough work physically, but completely worth it in the end. Jim told us how the public consistently requests more trails, and it was great to help meet that need!
After days of working hard, we had fun kayaking at Lake Needwood!!! #RC3 #ConservationCorps #YouthCorps #2Green
