I should've known you'd say something like that [she feigned a huff and allowed him to lift her chin. He'd probably have caught the dear in her eyes, because she honestly didn't have the strength to hide it. It wasn't their deaths that she feared though - it was being alone, more than anything. Especially at a time like this.] Do you think we're ever going to beat them?
[He smiles a bit at that, and, despite everything, plants a wet kiss on her forehead.] I don't think it's about beating them, River. It's just about understanding them.
Ω [HONEST THOUGHTS PLEASE DOCTOR. NO USING RULE ONE.]
Sometimes he thinks he may love River -- he definitely cares for her -- but he isn't sure whether that's a love born out of genuine feelings, or out of a feeling of obligation. He deems himself responsible for the way she lived her early life.
In any case, he is bound to her in several ways, tangled and twined, and he isn't looking to fix that anytime soon. He's not even sure if he could, at this point in both of their time streams.
A cure? How can they cure something they don't understand or believe in? [She pondered, letting her hands fall gently down onto his shoulders. There was the fact that he was the Doctor - a genius in his own right, but...did he know about this kind of thing?] Unless... [she trailed off, ducking her head down for a moment. She wanted to tell him that his presence was the most reassuring thing there was, but she didn't just yet.]
Well, how did humans learn to build a plane when for so long while they thought human flight was of magic and science fiction? [The Doctor countered lightly, tucking his hand under her chin to lift it up a little, so he could look at her face. It was a habitual motion, and even though she couldn't see him, he still found himself searching her eyes.] There's no harm in trying. Maybe with time we'll be able to figure out just what kind of science it is, and we'll be better off at countering it when it's used against us.
Our friend the grey-face. [River answered once he'd finished spouting different species that could've blinded her. It was really much simpler than that -- and to be honest, being blind wouldn't have bothered her so much had she not believed he, Tony and the few others she cared for were dead.] I do listen to you when you tell me not to look at things, sweetie. [Her hand came up then, but only to trace the outlines of his face since she couldn't see it.]
Well, that's reassuring. [The Doctor said in a teasing tone, trying to lighten the mood, but the strain she was feeling was all too evident -- something more than just being blind. He let her feel along his face, closing his eyes so she didn't accidentally poke him there.] You know, magic is just science people don't understand yet. There's probably a cure for it, if it was caused by that.
[His hand on her shoulder proved to be a small comfort and she rested hers atop it, using it to turn and gaze over his shoulder blindly. She would've smiled, but she wasn't so sure she could lie to him now -- so she didn't.] I can't see, Doctor. [She brought herself closer only to rest her head against his shoulder and take in his scent. It was as if she needed confirmation he was really there, really alive]
[The Doctor set a steadying hand on the back of her shoulder for a moment as she leaned against him, then took a step back, lifting her face up with his hand under her chin so he could get a better look at her eyes.]
Yes, I've gathered. What happened? Acid-spitting reptiles? No, there'd be evidence of burning... you didn't look directly at a castellian supernuella, did you? I know they look absolutely gorgeous from the corner of your eye, but I've told you, you're not supposed to look directly at them.
[Her eyes well up when she hears that sound - not because she's sad; but because it means he's alive. She stumbles toward where she thinks the noise of the TARDIS originates, though ends up some meters away and bumping into one of the nearby benches.] Doctor?
[The Doctor stepped out of the TARDIS cautiously, half-expecting to be faced with armed guards, or Sontarans, or some other species that had managed to outsmart River (in which case, scratch Sontaran, definitely not Sontaran) -- but he only ended up seeing River grabbing at thin air as though feeling her way around. What?]
Hey, hey- [he was at her side in a moment, setting a hand on her shoulder] what's got you all in a tizzy?
