OKAY BUT LIKE think about t h i s (aka lily going into sixth year)

lily loves her sister a lot and they're good friends until snape comes along and she finds out she's a witch, of course logically petunia denies that magic exists until someone from hogwarts shows up at her doorstep to explain EVERYTHING about the wizarding world and about hogwarts and then bam

petunia is extremely jealous and shuns lily out

imagine your older sister shunning you out??? someone you looked up to and played with???

anyway, time goes on and lily goes to hogwarts and is best friends with snape but then he gets into the wrong crowd, a crowd that holds blood prejudices about blood type that arent too different from a horrible man who plots to cleanse the world of said blood type.

aka your best friend, the person who was there for you when your sister shunned you out (not that you haven't been annoying in your own right) is friends with people who more or less plot to cleanse the world of people like you when your said best friend has already told you "it doesn't make a difference" if you're muggle-born or not

but then you make excuses because he's your best friend and your other friends just don't understand, and sometimes you dont either.

and then you're doing what good friends do and stick up for him in front of EVERYBODY (which takes a lot of bravery ok) and he calls you the nastiest slur you can call someone of your background

so you feel fucking shitty as hell like who wouldnt??? you doubt your self worth, you wonder if there is something wrong with you when you know there isnt, and it hits you: you don't belong in either world. you don't belong in the "normal" world or the wizarding world, you're more or less shunned from both. like, yes you've known this for a while but it doesnt completely hit you until your so called best friend joins their side, the side that is shunning your type out. you know attacks on muggle-borns and muggles are rising, you know people are being cruel to your kind in and outside of your school's walls and you don't really know what to do because you feel so shitty about yourself

you continue on though, summer is hard because you ex best friend lives so close and when you return to school you feel a bit lost. do you belong there? yes, you know you do, but do you really???

anyways this is my long rambling explanation about how i think lily's sixth year is a big part of her character development, when the war hits her at full force and she has two options: lie down and take it or fight it. she becomes antiquated with the marauders and she moves on in life, but that doesn't mean it's hard for her.
