(Un)friendly reminder that this is the first and only time we ever see Simon seeking comfort from Wilhelm

He’s decided — against other’s judgements — that he no longer cares. Wilhelm shifts in, reaching to pull Simon into his arms. And for a moment he almost forgets, instinctively leaning in to press his lips to Simon’s, before catching himself.

He hates this — hates himself — for how they’ve ended up here. But he’ll fix it. He has to.

For Simon.

For himself.

There’s a moment, a tiny moment, where we see Simon — who has just been reminded of how they were, when Wilhelm called his singing beautiful: close, intimate, free, themselves, and remembering how things are now, standing here: exposed, alone, distant, restricted — and is taken by surprised at Wilhelm’s sudden display of affection in public.

His gentle smile in response to the compliment drops to an expression of hesitance, before he melts and surrenders to the yearning ache to hold Wilhelm close in his arms once again.

The final scene

I had no expectations for Simon to say ‘I love you’ back to Wilhelm in the last scene. Because the point of that scene was to sense what was being said without words.
