HMMM. I don’t actually have that much original fiction, but here’s a lady!

Context: My attempt at trope-subverting high fantasy, starring a transgender lady dragon-knight and a bi ace herb witch. Here’s a picture, and here’s the tag with some of the inspiration for the story.

01. Full name: Burl Templesrun (a templesrun being any person sworn to the service of a temple as a messenger/warrior/ambassador-- in this case, the Dragon Temple)

02. Best friend: ??? Haven’t gotten that far yet.

03. Sexuality: Bisexual

04. Favourite colour: Gold. Call her shallow, but gold fever is one of the things that rub off on you when you grew up dirt poor and then entered the service of dragons.

05. Relationship status: Single and sworn to chastity for the duration of her quest (over a year long so far).

06. Ideal mate: Affectionate, accepting, zero tolerance for drama or hysterics, tall (at least enough that Burl doesn’t look extraordinarily tall by contrast). Must be the rock for her to rely on when she breaks down. Probably a woman, too; Burl never imagined herself ending up with a man.

07. Turn-ons: Hand and wrist kisses. Foot washing. Blindfolds. Slow dancing-- with no contact except hand holding and fingertip touches, passing within a few inches of her partner but never touching, keeping locked eye contact as they circle and sway in unison, locking their fingers together to hold on tighter when they get too lost in the dance. Other people wearing lots of jewelry (necklaces and chains and rings and bangles) that draws attention to the bare skin beneath.

08. Favourite food: Bama fruit. It grows along the Archipelago where Burl lives, and it’s got a thick, leathery skin with insides like soft jelly. You eat it by bruising the outside, then slitting the skin and drinking out the pulp with a straw; attempting to bite in will burst it all over you.

09. Crushes: Over the course of the story she falls in love with her herb witch travelling companion, who doesn’t... have a name yet... (It’s very early in planning still okay.) Anyway, Lovely Witch is a tol, no-nonsense lady with a mysterious secret, but thanks to the partial language barrier between them (because fantasy worlds can have more than one language, doncha know!) she and Burl have difficulty communicating at first. It’s not until Witch Lady starts teaching Burl sign language that Burl starts to figure out that there are things she’s not being told... but it’s too late, she’s head over heels and she just wants Witch Lady to wake up beside her and braid her hair every morning, and oh gods if that wasn’t bad enough, Burl is still sworn to chastity, everything is terrible, whywhywhy.

10. Favourite music: The Affirmations of the Dragon Temple. Affirmations are homophonic vocal chants sung in the round without instrumental accompaniments, written so that just about anybody with any voice or lack of skill can join in as long as they know the words. They’re meant to be sung as a community. It’s not the same when Burl tries to sing alone. :(

11. Biggest fear: That because Burl failed her quest to get military reinforcement from the southern elves, her people will not be able to resist colonization for much longer and many aspects of her society will be destroyed-- including the Dragon Temple.

12. Biggest fantasy: It’s her wedding day. She’s standing in the temple-- not the Dragon Temple, but the Women’s Temple. The matriarchs are there to read her the vows, and then Burl is not only married but accepted among them. Her people see, they understand: she is a woman.

13. Bad habits: Tearing her nails when they chip. Forgetting to eat. Continuing to sharpen her knife long after it is definitely 100% scarily sharp. Pretending that she is self-sufficient and doesn’t need anybody’s help when she actually does need help.

14. Biggest regret: Letting her family celebrate her coming of age by giving her a man’s name, rather than insisting on a woman’s name. Changing her name three years later just wasn’t the same.

15. Best kept secrets: That secretly she is a squishy puppy with many feelings that do not involve competence and confidence and not giving a damn what anyone else thinks.

16. Last thought: I seriously don’t understand this question

17. Worst romantic experience: I don’t want to be sad.

18. Biggest insecurity: Her height. Okay, it’s great for being a badass templesrun feared by criminals everywhere; it’s just not so great for being treated like a lovely flower. Somebody reassure this woman she’s not awkward and gawky.

19. Weapon of choice: Mace

20. Role model: The (trans) people who were fighting for rights and social acceptance in the dangerous years prior to Mother breaking the mountain open and the Dragon Temple being founded.
